As an annual passholder I even received an email from Universal about this. They are calling it "Jaws the final voyage".
On January 2, 2012, one of Universal Studios' most iconic rides is heading out to sea for the last time. In order to make room for an exciting new attraction, Captain Jake's Amity Boat Tours is closing and we invite you to come celebrate with one final ride of JAWS®.

Come relive your favorite memories and get ready to scream as the Great White Shark takes its last bite.

Being a Universal employee, I can not release any information that I may know about any changes to the park... but what I can say is that JKR and Warner Brothers would never allow Potter to be split between the two parks. When Potter is ready to expand, it will be in the space adjacent to where it is now...

Just announced:
JAWS and Amity Island will be closing 1/2/12 for good.
It will be making way for a new attraction and area not yet announced.

They are going to have a tunnel over to IOA and expand Harry Potter. The tunnel will, of course, have slidewalks as at many airports.

I was actually thinking that one of my first transfers would be to Jaws. Guess not. As I understand it, the reasons for closing it are sound. Still, it will be missed.

The ride was getting dated. I noticed that they had redone the queue this past Summer when I last visited. I will miss it.

Big Wallaby

Sure, it's dated. But that's part of the charm. I think the real reason is that it's a 20-year-old ride system that runs in the water, uses fire and explosions, water canons and more that I can't even think of right now. So when you combine the costs, it has to be a very expensive ride to run purely from a maintenance standpoint.

I'm definitely going to miss it when it's gone, it's one of my favorites at US, but if they can bring in something that's as well done as Potter it might be worth it. Especially considering how much more space they'll have to use.

Maybe they'll bring in Transformers? Whatever it is I see it being big.

From what I understand USO exec's said we won't be getting Transformers, probably because it's so similar to Spider Man (but that's just my guess).

I've been guessing and pondering this since it was announced, so my husband and I had a brain storm about what it could possibly be. This is what we came up with.

-Marvel/Ironman/Avengers? (Maybe, World Expo expansion but would that go to MSHI or would it fall into complications with Disney owning Marvel? Ideas? )
-Aliens? (There is the new Prometheus movie but that's a stretch and it's a Fox title)
-Star Trek? (Possible, it may fit into the World Expo expansion idea)
-Tremors/Val and Earls Monster World? (Okay, wishful thinking on my part!)
-G.I. Joe? (Possible I suppose, it did well and has a giant fan base)
-LoTR? (It's been speculated before and the land would be big enough I suppose)
-Twilight? (Dear God, Please not this.. anything but this)
-Ghostbusters? (I doubt they'd bring it back but I'll throw it out there)

Here's my take on your ideas.

-Marvel/Ironman/Avengers? (Maybe, World Expo expansion but would that go to MSHI or would it fall into complications with Disney owning Marvel? Ideas? )
I can't see this happening at all. My understanding is that the latest agreement Universal has with Marvel says they can keep what they have but cannot add anything.

-Aliens? (There is the new Prometheus movie but that's a stretch and it's a Fox title)
I don't pay attention to the Aliens series so can't really comment.

-Star Trek? (Possible, it may fit into the World Expo expansion idea)
This would be cool.

-Tremors/Val and Earls Monster World? (Okay, wishful thinking on my part!)
That would be great, I love the Tremors movies and the short lived series, though I agree that it's wishful thinking.

-G.I. Joe? (Possible I suppose, it did well and has a giant fan base)
Haven't paid attention to G.I. Joe since watching the cartoons as a kid.

-LoTR? (It's been speculated before and the land would be big enough I suppose)
This would be very, very cool. I love the LoTR books and movies.

-Twilight? (Dear God, Please not this.. anything but this)
Don't even talk about this!

-Ghostbusters? (I doubt they'd bring it back but I'll throw it out there)
Ghostbusters isn't as popular as they once were so I doubt it.

That was the original idea for adding Ghostbusters to the list but upon thinking of it more, I doubt it would take over Amity since it would fit better into New York.

Although rumors are flying suddenly about a Tuesday announcement. No idea on the source of them, seems to be spreading threw the various boards like wildfire though.

Someone commented that when a certain theme park closes a ride it's to put Winnie the Pooh or Stitch into the spot. That is so last decade, can we go back? Please? Remember, they did market research, and found their guests want more shopping. There's simply not enough shopping where they live, on the Internet, short drives away from their houses; they need to come to Florida, pay $81 per person per day and shop. Conversely, there's an Adventurer's Club in every town giving quality drinking entertainment; it's just that it's so exclusive that you don't know about it. Neither do I, but that's beside the point.

The Google Earth and Google Map images are old, those are going to be Apartments which where already going up on 2010 last time we where down in Florida.

I really, can't honestly see this being an WWoHP expansion. Personally I think Doctor McKey is right, splitting it between the two parks would not only be silly but their going to have to tear-down and move a lot of stuff in the backlot. I can't even understand where these HP rumors are coming from other then that was the last big announcement Universal made.

Yes, those apartments are complete and people live there now.

As far as Amity becoming London, I see a major problem with that, just by looking at a map of UOR. Amity is about as far north in the USF park as you can get, and WWoHP is about as far northwest as you can get at IoA. Problem comes when you look at the distance between the two.

In that problem could be an opportunity, though. I have had an idea for combining simulation (such as Star Tours) with a moving platform... In a way, Forbidden Journey captures the beginning of my idea. But to create an actual transport that uses motion from the vehicle, combined with what is on the screen and a simulator would make that work perfectly, since a transportation system between the two locations would have to cover almost 3,000 feet... And that's if they just made it a straight line and bulldozed everything in the way. So round-trip, you're looking at well over a mile. So what does that mean?

Plenty of transport time to create a really cool ride, if you wanted to do it that way.

The biggest problem then, though, is who gets inconvenienced, what gets moved, and what does it have to go around?

Overall, I am going to say no, I don't think Amity is gonna become London. However, if Harry Potter is going to expand, it would certainly be an interesting way to do it.

It would also be cool if, by creating a London area at USF, they then were took a position to perhaps have, say, a BBC area.

Just thinking out loud here...

I may have posted the link, but I haven't got a clue how likely or not it is. I've followed the website for years and they have a pretty good track record, but no where near perfect for rumors.

All that being said, it would certainly make sense from a purely business perspective. WWoHP has increased the gate on one park, so now there is a disparity between the two. Adding the same draw to the other park would help equalize crowds, and essentially double the return on their investment as far as the intellectual property is concerned. From a thematic point of view, it does separate nicely with Hogwarts and London.

It might frustrate some people since they would have to get admission to two parks in order to get the full experience. That, I think, might be the only thing Rowling would object to, as long as the quality was there for both parts.

As far as the logistics and georgraphy goes, as I said at the start, I'm clueless.

Just thinking out loud here...

I'd love a BBC area! Dr. Who, Red Dwarf, Black Adder... :) Rides based on the Tardis and the Star Bug. :) Perhaps a time travel adventure for Black Adder (with Rowin Atkinson and Hugh Laurie). Hmmmm I have a clever plan. And if the WWoHP can sell butterbeer, then perhaps a Black Adder attraction could sell something based on turnips. :)

The problem is these shows have limited visibility to the US audience, outside of sci-fi geeks (like myself) and PBS or BBC America aficionados. You really would have people asking, "Dr. Who???" Of course the British tourists would love it!

Maybe Universal could have an international program something like Disney's to bring over some Brits to staff the new land so you'd at least have a cast with appropriate accents. :)

Big Wallaby

to bring over some Brits to staff the new land so you'd at least have a cast with appropriate accents. :)If you are cast in certain roles, you are taught to be British. Now, are you convincing to those who come from the UK? I don't know, but I do know of several actors (not just Hugh Laurie) who have come from London (and one from Australia) for American TV shows and played American, and if you didn't hear them in an interview, you would have no clue they weren't American. Almost scary.

Also, when I was 14, I went to England, was staying at a hotel near the Kensington Palace, in the lift, when someone asked where I was from, and when I said Oregon in the US, they were shocked that I wasn't from this one town in England. I was not faking any accent, just speaking with my Oregonian accent.

Ok... just to squash the rumor of where WWoHP will be... It will not be in the Studios... that is 100% the case. I know someone had mentioned that the gates have seen a huge increase at IOA and that USF needs the boost from a Harry Potter themed area in order increase its gates. This is not the case.... Thier are a number of attractions that are set to close in the next couple of years in USF, and are not being mentioned as of yet in order to help with some more future surprises that are on the horizon for the park.

I can tell you now that the likelihood of Ghostbusters coming back to USF is about as good as us colonizing the moon in the next 5 years ( though their is a Japanese co. that has purchased the right to the first Domino's pizza for the moon. ), Star Trek would be awsome for an area... alas, Paramount would charge to much for it, and their not enough room. Paramount has tried Star Trek themed attractions before and the attendance was too low to keep it going. Aliens due to the contract 20th Century Fox has with Disney, and Trimmers does not have the following that USF would need in order to put money down on.

With that... I will say no further...

I have to admit, this rumor has been driving me completely insane. The idea is ludicrous and the distance is vast that they'd have to bridge, even though I've heard some good ideas about it. I can't see USO ripping the entire backlot to pieces, the construction time would take to long for the time frame they are probably looking at. Guessing they're going to try and fit something into the "100 years" anniversary coming up in 2012.

Although my husband and I came up with the greatest idea to send off JAWS, it'd never happen but it'd be fitting to follow the end of the movie and blow Foamy to pieces in the style of Martin Brody. :D:

I figured several of those would be a long shot but I've got no clue what rights US has anymore to attractions and other movies.

Well, we know it won't be Transformers unless Exec's have lied to us, which could be entirely the point but since it's a Spider Man clone.. I can't say.
Although I'd much rather hear you shoot down the "Twilight" idea then Star Trek!

Mmm, back to the drawing board with ideas.

Any word on an announcement? Last I heard someone commented there would be one on the days JAWS closed but I've only seen it in one place.

yes, people will do most anything to get a piece of disney.
look at the apple in the snow white ride, it got stolen so many times, people would jump out of thier ride car to steal it. disney got so tired of this they converted it into a fiber optical illusion. Disney legal a few times, like the best one was, heelo, Hey, someone is selling a mickey and minnie and donald costume on ebay, but sir, people are always selling disney costumes online, No, I mean, the "private" in house costumes, even has close up photos of disney wardrobe tags, err, sir, please hold. sounds of someone screaming. hello sir, can you give me the auction numbers, ok, they are XXX XXX XXX, ok sir, please hold. and I am watching the auction page, all of a sudden I see, THIS AUCTION IS CLOSED. hello sir, thank you so much, we appreasiate this.

My brother has lots of Disney items Property Control let go. He even has 3 of the old blue & yellow trams at his ranch. He won't tell me how he got them.

Honestly, you'd be surprised what WDW will sell when the annual auction comes along especially when they've done massive re-vamps or removals that year. Between that and what construction crews get to keep, there are amazing little pieces of Disneyana floating around out there in the wide world.

WHAT????? They tore up the old creatures from the Submarine Ride????
yeah, a theme park salvage place showed pictures of what they did to the props after/while disney was draining it to take it apart. eyes and tentecles where ripped off the squid, and the sea monster lost it's head and some feet.the salvages said between that and the water rot of the props and scenery, it wasnt even worth it to show up at all. the subs were too worn out, they got mostly seaweb and control panels from the ride.
hey, here is theold article:
http://www.crazedfanboy.com/spotlight/salvage.html
On the subject of the ye old Submarine Voyage ride, one of the sea serpents from the Disneyland ride (http://micechat.com/forums/disneyland-resort/49622-best-submarine-voyage-video-ive-seen-2.html) (remember there's 2; one on each side) was in decent enough condition to get auctioned off. I don't know if it was a whole one, but judging from the photo I saw (http://jimhillmedia.com/editor_in_chief1/b/jim_hill/archive/2007/01/29/looking-for-a-fun-time-at-the-movies-then-find-your-way-to-finding-kraftland.aspx), there was a good amount of the old fella left. I always thought the WDW version looked a bit too cartoony compared to DL's.

Sorry in advance if I'm not allowed to link those pages. :o:

The day we can walk in and take anything, Monorail Green is all mine. I'm going to start building some beamway to get it to my house now.

I've had dibs on the following items for at least 10 years:
-The Grand Chandelier in Boardwalk Hotel (When the Zombies finally come, I'm taking over a Disney Hotel and it shall be my cool pirate anti-zombie gang hangout)
-The one of the singing tiki poles in the Tiki Room (I'm gonna put it in my living room and have pre-recorded insults for when uninvited family comes over)
-The dude in the bathtub at BTMR (It's going in my front yard)
-The old Neon Cutouts of people in "Space" from the PeopleMover. (Also, my front yard)

:D:

Wow. You would never know it had been a water ride. Or any ride, really.

I guess it hasn't really struck me that the ride closed yet. I've seen sooooo many stories about it closing, how emotional every one was, a million youtube tributes, all the musicals and all that crap, I was overwhelmed and just kinda tried to ignore it all. Next time I go to the park, maybe I'll start to feel sad for it :(

yeah, without the water and decorations it looks like a constrution set. hmm, I think I can see poor bruce's frame in there still. just a little metal carriage that popped up to say hi to the people.
