View Full Version : Ride Break Down is "Traumatic"

Yesterday was interesting. Due to a staffing shortage at my ride, we had a hard time getting open and opened 10 minutes late (oh the horror). As first loaded boat approached the first lift, pumps shut off. Yeah, we had a loaded shut down with one freaking boat in the water. I knew the guest would not be happy because it was the same guest who came in through the closed chain to try to ride while we were opening up.

She made a big hairy deal over the fact that we opened late and now it was broken. She kept asking me if she got any kind of compensation. I know at Disney she would have had Re-Ads, but our park does not do that. (Wish they did, but they don't. I did suggest that to a manager after this incident, but I digress). I told her normally we don't do any kind of compensation, but that a manager would be there shortly and he would be the one to talk to.

When he came, she just kept repeating how this was "crap." She said the her son was a sensitive boy and that this was a very traumatic experience for him and she thought that they should give them compensation for the trauma we put him through. Literally all that happened was their boat stopped at the base of the lift and we had to have them get out and walk back to the station. She apparently tried to get our manager to comp next year's season passes. Good grief!

That kid is going to be in for a 'shit load' of disappointments.

Wait... the kid was supposedly traumatized by being on a ride that stopped and now his mother wants comped season passes so he could be traumatized again next season? :banghead:

to bad that manager didn't compensate them by haveing security walk them to the main gate, and tell them to have a nice day!

Yeah, I would've compensated them with a swift kick in the pants, right out of the park!:D: See how traumatizing that is, kid!

Well if a simple ride break down is traumatic both mom and kid are in for a hard life to be sure.

Gee whiz, the Amish don't freak out with stuff like that..and they lead pretty sheltered lives. Or they did...am no Amish expert.

I am a proud SG expert though ;)

The Omnish use horses and buggies. If the buggy gets a flat or breaks, they put the buggy to the side and use the horse. :D:

I have seen the attractions go through a safety fun with the managers. If something were to break down, they would let others know. When the attraction comes up fully, they will tell the CM's to go ahead and open it.

I have seen late openings for Indy and Big Thunder.

It's more fun to see SG try to get into a blocked off area when the attraction is closed down for refurbishment. The wall is there for a reason. Don't think the ride can work with no crew or cars.

I could be wrong, but I thought most amusement/theme parks include a disclaimer somewhere (on the tickets, or on a sign at the ticket booths) that included that they could not guarantee that any particular attraction would be working at any particular time, and such. If this is so, this should have been pointed out to this customer, and they should have been informed that, as such, they were not entitled to any special compensation.

Oh yeah, like that sort of SG would be calmed down by the cold force of reality!

Are you *sure* you work at a theme park? ;)

I thought that is what the information boards.

When I went to Williamsburg, the Kings park out there made you sign a form. If you do something stupid, the theme park has the right to kick you out.

Um...no, I don't believe I ever said I work at a theme park. Been mistaken a couple of times as an employee at the local amusement park a couple of times, due to a vest I happen to like wear when going on outings, though. Still, I never have tried to pass myself off as such.

I'm sure there are those SC who would not be calmed down by anything less than a large dose of tranquilizers and/or repeated applications of a large blunt object to their heads. However, if such a disclaimer is in place, then at least the employees as well as management have something to back up why they don't have to give the SC anything extra.

how does that work?:cool:The same way a roller coaster wheel or train wheel can go flat, I am sure. But being wood instead of silicone or metal, I would imagine it's a much faster process.

The same way a roller coaster wheel or train wheel can go flat, I am sure. But being wood instead of silicone or metal, I would imagine it's a much faster process.

most of the wagons I grew up around had metal on the wheels around the rim of the wooden wheel. pretty sturdy.

but those wagons were mostly reporductions and not used in everyday farming. they only brought them out during parades or on display at the county fair.

road in one for about a quarer mile, I can't imagine riding in one across country for months on end. gives you a whole new respect for the men and women that did. (no wonder a lot of them walked next to the wagon!!)

Coaster wheels can produce deformities in them, but I can only recall one occurrence where a coaster wheel literally exploded. That was back when Goliath @ Six Flags opened. The polyurethane used was not treated for the high temps that the train was producing, and it literally melted and flew off the wheel on the brake run.

Other than that, coaster wheels actually take a long long time to go "flat" so to say. I remember Xcelerator ran on a set of wheels for years, producing cracks in them even, before we changed them out.

When Big Thunder had that accident, didn't one of the wheels fracture?

Amish buggies are prone to getting hit by cars which can really cause damage--and not just to the wheels, either.

Has anyone besides me seen that greeting card titled, "Amish Road Rage"?

"Place it up thy butter churn!"
"Get thee out of the way, Yoder!"
"Thy mother weareth army boots!"

Actually, the Amish don't use King James English; that was the Quakers, a completely different sect.

Update: I found out that it was not season passes for the next year, it was season passes for life! The manager had told her she could skip the line after we reopened, but that wasn't good enough. Rumor is that she also wrote a letter to the general manager of the park as well (and no, she did not receive any compensation).

I'm 'sensitive' and I was pulled out of a train on Space Mountain after it started last time I was in DLR, can I get free season passes for life? :p:

It was actually kind of funny because we had someone in our group with really bad gremlins, he's crashed an uno attack card shooter...multiple times, and so we blamed him...and tried to keep track of everything he 'broke' and that was the beginning of the first day. It really wasn't anything, I guess there was a safety problem with the train so they decided to take it off the circuit. So we all got to sit tight while they pulled us all off before taking it back and getting us back on the ride.

His initials wouldn't be J.B. would they? I knew a guy that claimed to have bad luck on every trip to Disney. Multiple attraction breakdowns and a car that got broken into.

No, no J.B. but he really is bad around machines. Like I said, I was there when the Uno attack machine crashed when he pushed the button, it did it almost every time he tried to use it.
