Jaws was dry for the first few weeks of May, so all the Skippers were homed to new attractions for a while. My roommate ended up at Simpsons. One night, she comes home absolutely FUMING, stomps into the living room and yells, "GORDON! Have I got a story for you!!!"

She was working grouper on level 2 when family approached with a child who was clearly too short to ride. My roommate informed the woman that the child would need to be measured because the height requirement was...
SG: Fifty Inches! I KNOW. She's tall enough!
TM: Well, maam' our height requirement is 40" and I still have to measure her.

The woman protested loudly; but in the end that child was measured and found to be several inches too short to ride the ride. The TM informed the SG of Universal's child swap policies and directs the family (minus the child and mother) into the correct line. She turns around a little later and sees the family still in line; but this time the mother is with them and there is no sign of the child. She thinks its a little weird but decides to let the loader deal with them.

Well....turns out she was the loader since she got bumped to the next position just as the family was entering the car. The TM puts on her "happy face" and loads the guests in the car but notices that the mother now was a large duffel bag with her that she is trying to shove under the seat.

TM: I'm sorry ma'am that bag is too large to ride. It will have to go against the wall.
SG: THIS BAG STAYS WITH ME
TM: The bag will not be leaving the room, it's just not safe for it to ride with you..."
SG: THIS IS RIDICULOUS! I'M RIDING WITH MY BAG

The SG stands up to make her point and as she lifts the bag it wiggles.

TM: Ma'am...Did you put your CHILD in that bag?!
SG: HOW DARE YOU INSULT MY PARENTING SKILLS!! WHAT KIND OF PERSON WOULD..."

the bag coughs.

TM: Ma'am. I'm only going to say this once and then I'm going to call security. You need to leave. Right. Now.
SG: BUT...BUT...BUT...
TM: BUT, BUT, BUT...GET OUT!!!

and all I got to do for the Dry was wave a stuffed cow at Twister.

It would not be the first time. It happened in 1987 in Winnipeg http://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=1948&dat=19880116&id=mkcjAAAAIBAJ&sjid=lMwFAAAAIBAJ&pg=6249,2330000
and twice since then at LAX. The Winnipeg incedent was idiot screeners not letting the woman remove the baby before they sent the papoose through the scanner. The LAX incedents may have been due to language barriers and inexperianced travellers. But in all cases it appears that the person watching the screen immediatly realized there was a baby in the machine.

A duffle bag's a lot cheaper than a park ticket. And you can take them into the buffets, just slip 'em food through the zipper. Heck, you can even get a picture with characters and your special bag!

I mean what kind of parent would do such a thing. the worst I've ever dealt with was a a mother that wanted her infant baby to ride with her on a roller coaster. She didn't speak alot of english so I assumed she was either trying to trick me into just letting her go with her baby or she really didn't have a clue about the rules. (although i doubt it)

But seriously this woman who tried to sneak her child on like that deserves the "Best parent of the Year" award because she truly deserves it

MATRA is a global system. So if it goes down for WDW, it probably goes down for DLR, DLP and the rest.

It was fun when I was at Safari, and they updated CDS. What a nightmare, and I understand that that, too, was global.

hobie16
02-01-2011, 10:06 AM
If MARTA is a global system then the problem is probably a processor(s) that is too slow for peak demand. If the system fails at DL after WDW closes then it appears system resources are being allocated to WDW to close out.

Shorty82
02-01-2011, 11:56 AM
I understand using the same software on both coasts but not the same servers. WDW and DLR should have their own servers for both CDS and MATRA, that way if one resort goes down it doesn't take everybody down. That also keeps everything on the local networks so which would be faster, more secure and stable than having it go across the country over the Internet (or however they are connected together).

They may also have it all housed in a central location that is not at either park, but sitting in a data center. The availability of high speed connections, plus VPN's would allow speed and security without having to duplicate hardware and personnel. My guess would be similar to Hobie's, but my guess would be a DB that is getting hammered. All speculation on my part based on real world experience :)

hobie16
02-01-2011, 02:04 PM
Remember the DB is just software. It's the hardware that is the limiting factor.

There's probably a priority set for WDW close transactions. The DL terminals aren't really down. They're just running reaaaaaallllyyyyy slooooooooooooowww.

Easy fix but could be costly. New server with more performance. With not knowing what's being used it could either be a large Sum machine or possibly a IBM S/390 class system.

The other option would be to buffer the cpu with caching devices that would offload processor hits. Fairly cheap option.

Very true, but the reported problem crops up when WDW is closing their books for the day. That's a pretty good indication that either they have priority over DL or the CPU is getting hammered. The data center logs will tell the tale.

Big Wallaby
02-01-2011, 11:09 PM
My guess would be that WDW does have that priority, since it is the largest property with the most terminals.

I am fairly sure that if I was to check my CDS from DL I would be able to. There are different login screens for the different parks within the WDW property, but they all go to the information. In fact, there have been days where the MK site didn't work, so they sent us through the Epcot sign in. I would imagine that DL, DLP, DLHK, TD, etc. are all the same way, just different sub locations of the same system. Kinda like if you go to check your e-mail, you have the option of where in the country (or world) you are.

You wouldn't be able to. Same system, different servers.

We had an SCMT in my area where someone decided as a "prank" to switch the CDS computers to DLR's server as opposed to WDW's. No one could figure out why CDS was showing people as having no shift and not letting people clock in, not to mention refusing to display schedules (that CDS option is disabled at DLR). It was only figured it out when someone noticed that the clock in CDS was running three hours behind.

As I understand it, a similar principle applies to a bunch of systems, including the registers. And of course, the Parks and Resorts outside the United States have their own systems which are completely separate from those used at DLR/WDW, so they're not even an issue.

hobie16
02-02-2011, 04:50 AM

Priority would not be based on size of park. It would be set up to allocate resources to process large jobs that occur at the end of the business day.

Meanwhile, in another time zone, CMs are attempting to process very small transactions that consist of:

Is this credit card valid and can $XXX be charged to it? YES/NO
