View Full Version : The ropes are there for a reason!

I hate when people act like we put ropes up just cuz we were bored or something... the worst is when you're on register and this happens. At one of the locations I work at a lot, there are two registers at each window... sometimes we'll only have one of those registers open so we put a rope up to prevent guests from forming two lines.
Last night was a perfect example... we had half the window open but they didn't put the rope up, so I had to keep telling guests that the ONLY line started infront of me. That doesn't help much tho, and you get real tired of repeating yourself. So I got my line down and as soon as that happened I went to hunt for the rope. Found it and put it up... but the ropes only work if they STAY up and aren't removed by stupid guests. I had to go out and put it back THREE times.
Honestly... how much common sense does it take to realize I have the rope there for a reason, and that reason is NOT for you to take it down and try to form a second line?

Ohhh boy could I go on and on about this one.
Yes the ropes are there for a reason. Actually a couple of reasons. One of the reasons we have them up at the Stroller Shop is to separate the guests from the pit where we hand out the strollers. Well some stupid people take it upon themselves to climb over those ropes to use our trash can or whatever. Sometimes when it's busy we throw the strollers from the back room into the pit and more than once I've nearly hit guests who shouldn't have been in the pit in the first place. :throw:
Another reason is to mark off our queue (yes, that is the correct spelling). Ropes are NOT there to sit on!! It's not uncommon for our ropes to break because of people sitting on them and we have had a few CFA runs because of people falling as a result of sitting on the ropes. One time I saw a kid sit on a rope that was attached to a rollaway and fall down, got back up and just sat on another one. Don't people ever learn?! :bang:
Ropes are also not there to jump over like hurdles!! We've had a couple of CFA runs for kids who thought they'd be cool and jump over the ropes, only to trip and fall flat on their face.

Forget the ropes I had full on railings in my resturant. Did anyone ever use them? NO! Guest would come in through the exits even though they were clearly marked. Argh!!

At attractions we use rops and sometimes roll away stanchons for the extened queues when we are busy. Frequently guests will just jump over the rops because they wanted to get to whereever the queue was going. Several times I would ask the guest if they even knew where they were going, and most of the time they didn't know where the queue was going. Sometimes they would even leave the queue after I told them where it was going. On a side note I wonder how these people think that the rope will hold their weight when it's under an inch in diameter.

I always laugh when people fall from sitting or jumping over the ropes. Most the people who do that deserve it anyway.

We had such a problem on Indy of people hurting themselves at Rope Drop racing for the attraction, and tangling themselves up in the queue ropes.
So one of the GC leads had a sign made that said "Indiana Jones Adventure" on it, and I stood in front of Rope Drop with that sign, telling people that if they did not follow me slowly through the line, they'd be sent to the back. It really did help slow them down, and fill up the queue nicely.
And on nice busy days, I would walk really slowly to give the RO's more time before opening. ;)

We used to have a spiel "For your safety please do not sit or stand on the handrails, they will break, you will fall, we will laugh."

A line I've used WAY too often:
"Everybody needs to get down off this cart, it's on wheels, it will roll, you will fall, you will get hurt, I will have to fill out paperwork...and I hate filling out paperwork."

Ropes, keehee... I've had some people sit on our trash can liner holders (more commonly known as 3 liners, 6 liners, and 8 liners). They sit on them to watch the parade and the fireworks.
Now, I ask you, why whould people want to sit on things with wheels that are used for holling away trash???

The ropes are there for a reason....
I like the hundreds of arguements I have a day... Especially when guests want to go under/over our ropes and into the parade route. I have to tell them that they have to go around, then they add that it is an inconvenience that they have to walk all the way around when what they want to get to is right over there....Ummm, can you not see the giant float in the way??!? But then again, they are blind to signs.

lol I love that line....
One of my friends was telling me about a job he used to have... if someone was doing something stupid that they shouldn't be doing, and they got hurt doing it, there was LOTS of paperwork to fill out. BUT, if they died, then there was less paperwork to fill out... so when someone there started doing something stupid, he just reminded them about the paperwork, and how he'd make sure one way or another he wouldn't be filling out any paperwork  It usually stopped them pretty quickly.

I just hate it when guests take the ropes down themselves, when they do that, there's a mad rush of people going through and people geting stepped and stomped on.

Grad Nite merge point spiel:
"Welcome Graduates to Pirates of the Caribbean! If you are smart enough to gradate high school, then you are smart enough to follow our rules. One of the rules we have here is that there is no sitting on the queue chains. If you sit on them, you will fall, and we will laugh. Thank you!"

last night's grad nite, I had NO tolerance for those little twerps. I was at Splash photo, and I was just bein the anal retentive, goody-goody CM (because I CAN). Anyway, kid goes over the ropes, and demands to look at his picture. I told him to go back and come through the queue the CORRECT way, not the way that "an accident could happen, and I would have to make the call, and fill out accident reports for being a witness." He goes on to say "well, there was no one in line."
me: I don't care, go back around, and I will let you see your picture
him: why the attitude?
me: what attitude, you're the one not following the rules.
him: you know, you're a f***ing b*tch. .
me: only to people who don't follow rules. . .
he gets helped by another CM, and he tells the CM that I was really rude to him, and. . .
TALKED TO HIM IN A RACIST TONE!!
I heard that part, and asked him what he means by racist. . considering that race was never part of the issue.
him: I just think you're racist.
me: what makes you think so?
him: you just look like someone who has something against mexicans, and you're taking it out on me
me: what makes you think I might not be part mexican?
(i'm 1/2 filipino, 1/2 white, but sometimes i can be mistaken to be of hispanic origin)
him: because you don't have any mexican pride. . .
me: how would i show pride?
him: by letting me just cross the ropes. . .and I didn't go over. . I unhooked the rope, and walked through. . . .
(nope, I saw the left leg go over, followed by the right. . unless he just steps with his knees up to his chest. . .)
but yeah, granted that ropes are there for a reason, is it THAT hard to walk a few more feet, around a couple more corners?

would'nt saying that you "look like someone who's racist" be a prejudice comment in itself? gosh people can be really dumb

One day at small world i was grouping guests onto the boat when i hear a loud thud. I turn around and see this girl laying on the floor crying. Turns out she was sitting on the chain and it broke. This caused her to hit her head on the railing and we had to have a CFA run.
Also, something that is so common it's scary. The que is devided in 1/2 near the grouper possition at small world so if the grouper must go up the side of the line they can to find a smaller group. A chain prevents people from coming down both sides, till a guest gets the bright idea that maybe they'll get on the ride faster if they take the chain down and start two lines.
I love the look on their face when i make them wait there for ever till i put them on a boat.

When I drive trams for backstage talent, I give a speil (ever since an incident where an ADULT MMD chaperone stood up and leaned over the side while we were moving) before departure:
"Please remain seated at all times while the tram is in motion. If you need me to stop the tram, please send a blood curtling scream my way and I will know that you need my attention."

yeah, I suppose I could have gotten more into it with that kid, but what I REALLY wanted to say was: . . .
"you look like someone who's mommy still needs to dress you"
(in case I didn't put it in my last post, the kid was wearing a nice suit/tie ensemble, navy blue/black color. . . with RED AND WHITE BASKETBALL SHOES!!!!) :!:

I used to do that on Space too. We all did actually. I think I may have even trained it that way once or twice.

I was working crowd control at castle the other night for the fire works. We normally clear out the area up to the carousel and set up ropes. To further deter quest from enetering into the area we have four or five cast members along the rope.
Along comes this girl. The area in front of the ropes is relatively clear-I guess making an appealing runway. I see her turn, face the ropes and then start running towards the rope. Despite the fact that there casts members everywhere, the girls gets to the rope and jumps. Who knows where she was going or why she felt that she had to hurt past us. But the cast member next to me reached up and caught her mid-flight. the girl droped, and ended up stradling the rope. the cast member said nice try and sent her off. What did that girl do, drop her brain in the trash? Did she think she was going to get past us? And if she did, where was she going to go? All the rides were closed and the entire area was ropped.

I remember at small world when people would ask for the front row. I had three families ask in a row so to be polite I told them to wait off to the side. One of the families decided it was their turn to go in front of the first family. I had to stop grouping, and by this time we were on the third boat loading, when I went to tell the first family to go ahead before I could get anything out the mom rudely asked when it was their turn I replied " NExt one," because I had already finished loading and she walked to the first row anyways ( even though that didn't help the boat was already leaving the station) and replied to me " You're just a snob," :? I thought thats the worst you can do for me trying to get you on the ride and not let this other family get in front of you? Keeping in mind I was on south side and there was also a special assistance party who had been waiting before her.... I just smiled :D and let her go her merry little way...since everything is off to the side anyways and you really don't need the front for a better view

In all honesty, what is it with so many people being so persistent about being in the front? I can understand if a small child is bitching and complaining, but still, attractions CMs can only do what they can do. What I don't get is why they're all persistent, when you get the same view from wherever you are!
My b/f, his kids and I got the back center row of Soarin. The only thing we thought that sucked, was that you could see FEET above you. It doesn't take away one being able to enjoy the attraction, that's just an added view. . .LOL
I have a friend (she's 21 years old, and in most cases, considered normal. . . at least medically), who HAS to be up front AND in the drivers seat on Indy. . I know she's an Indy fan (movies, attraction, etc). We went on Indy, and as we're coming up to loading, she looks at me and says "we have to get up front . . " I tell her that there's a chance we can get it, it depends on the people in front of us, yadda yadda yadda. . . when the CM told us to go to the last row, she grabs me, steps aside, and tells the CM that we're waiting for the front. So the CM's cool w/ it, and lets the party in front of us go right ahead. He lets us into the first row on the next car/jeep, along with a father and a child (age 8-10). The child asks his dad if he can drive, and his dad says "Well, if one of these ladies says its ok, sure you can drive." My friend turns around and says "I've been waiting for it. . . I'm sitting there. . ." I told her she should go ahead and let the kid drive, and she said she wouldn't.
See, younger kids wanting a certain place on an attraction is more acceptable to make them feel special, than a grown woman (in her case, old girl) being persistent on getting a certain place on an attraction.

People probably want the first row because their tour book told them to try and get the front row. Unfortunately, the same tour book does NOT say the front row for EACH attraction, but once the 'smart' guest reads it once, they 'read' it each time.

so this probably is supposed to be in the stupid castmember thread but the subject thread reminded that the chains are there for a reason as well. of course, chains do the same as ropes and direct guests, but they are also there for cms to go around them.
I remember it as clear as day. I was working the foyer position at HM on a fairly busy day. It was pretty cold that day and I was wearing the cape, very cool costume piece I might add, especially, if you got the double breasted one from WDW. I digress. Anywho, I was running around like crazy opening the queue since the park was getting quite busy. Well the phone was ringing and I thought I would look really cool if I jumped over the chain at the porch being that I am so nimble and athletic. Unfortunately, I misjudged the height of the chain and both my feet were caught as I was in mid-leap over the chain. Consequently, my feet were hung up on the chain, my cape flew over my head, and I fell on my forehead with my feet resting on the chain with maybe 60 to 80 astonished at what they had just seen. I must of been stuck in that position for maybe 30 seconds before I realized what had just happened.
Well, anyway, I had to go to CFA and had a gnarly bump on my forehead and from that day on...I never jumped a chain again. Ahhh the good ol'd days...
