On Monday or Tuesday, in Adventureland, at the Peter Pan & Wendy meet n greet beside Pirates.
Next family in line has a toddler, who is terrified to meet Peter and Wendy. Toddler is busy working on a giant lollipop, one as big as his head.
Dad insists the child join his sibling for a photo. Tears. Screaming. Toddler moves away. Dad grabs toddler by the arm. pulls him back. Child drops lollipop. It shatters into a million pieces. Major crying and screaming from a terrified and upset child. Dad still insisting that the kid get in to the photo!
Peter and Wendy are shocked, in fact Wendy appears near tears. Peter picks up the remains of the lollipop and runs off in the direction of the pirate store. A handler has appeared by this time, and calls for cleanup crew to deal with the shattered candy bits.
Peter Pan reappears with a new Lollipop for the upset kid, now in moms arms. Child still to scared to take the candy, but Peter and Wendy settle him enough to hand him a new lollipop. No photo for scared child. Thank goodness. The family go on their way, probably to frighten the little one somewhere else.
Yay for Peter Pan ! :yourock: His attempt to appease the frightened toddler was so very gentle and thoughtfull.
Too bad he could not have given the Dad a slap in the head tho !

How is it that the boy who couldn't grow up acted the most mature in the event?

If any kid is scared of the characters, let the child view the character from a distance.

I took a screaming Abby to meet Rafiki and Timon on our last trip to WDW. Well, she was in a stroller and crying a bit about it. Two days later she ran up to Minnie Mouse and Chip and Dale. That signaled the end of her fear of the characters. She was only weary of Captain Hook and the Mad Hatter. She did inform me the other night that when we visit WDW she will not be scared of the Mad Hatter this time :D:
She didn't want her picture with Mary Poppins either, but the 2nd time we saw her she did. I think she out grew her fears, but wanted to hit the rides instead.

Our daughter's first exposure to life sized Disney characters (you know, the real characters, not just the ones in the movies...):) was just after her second birthday. We went to breakfast at 'Ohana, and she was TERRIFIED of Mickey and Minnie...so she just sat on my lap with her head burried on my shoulder when the characters were out. I did get her to smile and wave at Minnie, but that was all she would do. Our son, on the other hand, had his first exposure to Mickey when he was three (about two years before the above), walked up to Mickey (with Mom right next to him - didn't want Mom to be too far away!), hugged mickey, and proceded to tell him all about what we had seen at WDW that day.
I think the father that was wanting his kid to have that picture soooo bad should be made to do something he is horribly frightened of for an hour or so as punishment....
edit...oops - I forgot the whens for the above...'Ohana was in December of 2003, and the other was in March of 2000.

Some parents will do anything for pictures...ugh.
My daughter is afraid of face characters, so I don't even try it. I approached Alice with her in tow once, she started to cry and we left! I think it just has to do with it being a stranger. Mickey and Minnie she can handle, they look like life sized toys to her.

Ugh! I hate it when adults force their kids to see the characters! It makes for a difficult situation for everyone. And why would you want a picture of your child all upset and crying? For the sake of everyone around (and especially your child), PLEASE don't make your kids go up to a character if they are terrified.

Now I need to dig up the picture of Abby from her first trip to Disneyland. She is screaming in her high chair at Plaza Inn, Tigger next to her with hands on the sides of his face. Priceless!
You can ask Susi, DisneyMom or glendalis how traumatized she is now :D:

On Tuesday I was walking down the hallway and I came across Mary Poppins. I asked "Where is Bert?" She said "He just blew off."
The way she said it had me laughing.

I remember seeing a clip on America's Funniest Videos some years ago of a little girl, maybe 2 years old, in a high chair at Crystal Palace. Pooh Bear is approaching her tentatively from behind -- obviously trying to arrive without frightening her. But... she doesn't see him until he's right by her because her head is turned.
When she looks back the other direction and sees him standing there, she very calmly and matter of factly says, "Hi, Pooh." ... :pooh:
... and then, after a second's pause, let's out a bloodcurdling scream of terror at having a 5-foot-tall Winnie the Pooh at her side! (Pooh immediately backed off and parents went to comfort her.)
I normally don't laugh at distraught kids, but the contrast of the very casual "Hi, Pooh" before the scare kicked in was too cute.

I saw one similar to that, only it was Eeyore coming up from behind her, and doing the tap on the right shoulder while coming up the left side thing. "Hi Eeyore." WAAAAHHHH!!!! Oh, wait, I think it was a boy on that one.

Why is it when the characters come out in Critter Crountry and the SG stop all over the hill? If you see a cast member coming up the hill, please folks, clear a path so they can pass. If not, you will be sorry! :D:

worst thing I seen there was a tiny CM pushing a huge ice creeam cart from back stage through Critter Country at DLR. People would not get out of the way of impending doom if the CM let go.
I love this video and there are three parts,

I am glad Peter was able to save the day. They should be happy they got a free lollipop to boot. If I was a little kid I might freak out over a dude in green like Peter.

Hehe, we used to live near Cabazon where the Dinosaurs from PeeWee's Big Adventure are....
My youngest son was happy to "Go see the Dinosaurs" when he was about 3
until we got there and started walking toward them, whereupon he started crying ,"NO dinosaurs, NO Dinosaurs!" in total dread.....he thought Dinosaurs were little plastic toys:rolleyes:
I did finally convince him to go in, and he was very happy to see that the "Brontosaurus" had an amazing toy shop inside!:)

I loved going there when I was a kid! I remember when the Brontosaurus was the only Dino there too. Now I need to go see them next time I am out there...

Yay for Peter & Wendy saving the day! When DS was 3yo (his 4th Disney trip) he was terrified of characters (just seeing Chuck E. Cheese across the restaurant nearly killed him!). We just planned to ignore them all (as we had done during the other trips) so as not to upset him. However, we were at Epcot heading to a restroom, and we saw Flik & Atta standing nearby. I was just planning to keep walking and holding his hand, hoping he wouldn't notice them (as they were close to the restrooms). All of a sudden he let go of my hand, so I looked up - Flik and Atta had both dropped to their knees and had their hands open but in their laps. They just sat there as if there were not another child in the park, and they were only there for DS's enjoyment. He very cautiously walked over, the whole time they just sat there and waited very patiently. He eventually made it all the way and we have some great pictures as a result. It surprised all of us (parents & g'parents) since we never expected it. I just couldn't say enough about those two lovely ants and how they changed his perspective of character greetings.
Needless to say I always appreciate when characters go out of their way to assist guests who sometimes need protection from their own SG parents!

Hi Anyname... What a great story! Who would have thought a couple of ants could help a child overcome his fears. :)
Welcome to SGT - we hope you'll enjoy your time here. Marsupials are probably working or dozing in their lounge chairs, but I'm sure they'll be along soon to give you an official welcome.

I can understand the parents frustration. Sometimes kids throw fits to get out of something. Like they say the have to go potty to avoid going on a ride and they really don't have to go. But for the sake of the characters, just let it go. I bet that employee received no comendation or praise. Too often their deeds go unnoticed.

In the Peter Pan indecent, we made a point of stopping at City Hall to give them the details and make sure he was recognized for it ! We were thrilled to be able to do so.
