View Full Version : Knott's Berry Tales of Stupid Guest and Employees

For any of you KBF employees and intelligent guests (endangered species). I am a Knott's employee and I am looking for your input. I am putting together a collection of stupidity, anything input about KBF is appreciated. I'll get the ball rolling:

I've been working seven months and am already a senior member of my staff!

We have the Pepsi logo and color on display in a bazillion places and people have the nerve to order coke and/or sprite.

I have an empty pretzel case next to me, so people ask for pretzels.

A Conversation Between a Supervisor and a stocker:
Stocker: "I like to finish what I start"
Supervisor: "You're not going to do that around me!"

Schedules are not posted until the day before it goes into affect, and that is if there is a schedule made!

There are soda machines ($3) next to shops that sell soda ($3.18)

Guest think the soda machines only cost $1 and complain when they don't get their soda for a dollar.

Food shops fail KBF inspections.

OC Health inspectors only come in the morning, before massive amounts of food are sitting out.

A Guest Asking For Directions From Wilderness to anything
Guest: Where are the Dippin Dots?
GSA: On the opposite end of the park.
Guest: Is that far?

The Calico Railroad Route is lined with dumpsters.

Boomerang is now PURPLE AND GREEN.

The Boardwalk buildings are now NEON ORANGE AND TURQUIOSE

KBF can afford a $16 million coaster, but an entire section of the park must share one mop, one broom, one dustpan, and can only use watered down handsoap as a cleaning solution.

Oil in fryers is rarely changed.

Shift Leads are more concerned with making the paperwork "cute" than actually doing their job.

There is a lot more but I'll leave that to you. AND I you can figure out who I am, you'll get a prize

KBF Ride Op

Well I used to work for the park almost 2 years ago as a ride op. I love the park, I still go all the time, but working conditions there blew. I had alot of fun doing it (sometimes) and miss doing it often. I think the worst part about the place is "seasonal" status they put you on forever. I dont know if the Disney parks do this also, but they told me when I hired on that I would be promoted to "part-time" in 3 months. Then that changed to 6 months. I worked there almost 8 months and still never got a promotion. I had nothing against me on my record or anything, they were just being stingey. Oh well though.

A Conversation Between a Supervisor and a stocker:
Stocker: "I like to finish what I start"
Supervisor: "You're not going to do that around me!"One of the reasons I didn't last long in when I got "promoted" to park foods..I was to efficiant and I wanted stuff like ..you know..training

Schedules are not posted until the day before it goes into affect, and that is if there is a schedule made! And that is a big IF... it was alwyas like a game of Russian Roullette..when do we get the bad news ?

There are soda machines ($3) next to shops that sell soda ($3.18 )Good LORD!!!! Who do they think they are...Disneyland ?

Food shops fail KBF inspections. What shop is this..I had the unique pleasure of working in Three Park Foods Locations. Grizzly Creek Lodge ( now Lucy's Lunch Box), Glider Diner( I still have nightmares) and Ghost Town Funnel( I realy used to like that stuff too)

OC Health inspectors only come in the morning, before massive amounts of food are sitting out.In my day..we paid them off

The Calico Railroad Route is lined with dumpsters.Sad...I was there in the transition from the Knott family to Ceader Fair...and it's been al down hill.

Boomerang is now PURPLE AND GREEN.PUKE!!!! :? Is the Lakside Terrace Still there ?

The Boardwalk buildings are now NEON ORANGE AND TURQUIOSEAn East Coast Amusement Park Co. Trying to Run a Wet Coast Theme Park.

KBF can afford a $16 million coaster, but an entire section of the park must share one mop, one broom, one dustpan, and can only use watered down handsoap as a cleaning solution.Duh!!

Oil in fryers is rarely changed. When there is any oil at all

Shift Leads are more concerned with making the paperwork "cute" than actually doing their job.I wanted to strangle those people

There is a lot more but I'll leave that to you. AND I you can figure out who I am, you'll get a prize :lol:Same here

Isn't Xcelerator also being permanently taken down, along w/ Superman @ Six Flags for some reason?

This is the report I found. As of right now Superman is still shutdown for the same reason.

From: MercuryNews.com (http://www.mercurynews.com/mld/mercurynews/news/breaking_news/9027170.htm)BUENA PARK, Calif. (AP) - Knott's Berry Farm reopened its Xcelerator roller coaster with a modified restraint system to meet new state standards.

State investigators asked Knott's on June 1 to shut down its ride amid concerns about the safety of the T-shaped lap bar after a man was killed on a similar ride in Massachusetts.

An investigator from the Department of Occupational Safety and Health approved the ride's improvements Saturday, and it reopened in the early afternoon.

Hundreds of riders lined up for about 90 minutes to ride Xcelerator.

"There's not a lot of corkscrews, not a lot of loop-de-loops and not a lot of jagged movement," said Keon Lombard, 25, of Inglewood. "It's a sturdy ride."

Other fatal accidents have been attributed to the T-bar restraint, including one when an obese woman fell out of Knott's Perilous Plunge ride in 2001. Knott's spokeswoman Susan Tierney said a new shoulder harness was installed before that ride reopened.

Under the new system, an indicator beneath the Xcelerator's lap bar turns from red to green when a rider pulls down the bar. Side bars were doubled to 14 inches.

Well, I remember when they had the VertiGo attraction, (in place of Haunted Shack) and they tore it down, because the replica at Cedar Point cracked due to weather conditions that we do not get here in Southern California. No one was on the attraction when it happened. I'm sure they figured "Better safe than sorry."

An investigator from the Department of Occupational Safety and Health approved the ride's improvements Saturday, and it reopened in the early afternoon.
Wow, they passed a Safety and Health inspection! Next stop, food locations!

Hundreds of riders lined up for about 90 minutes to ride Xcelerator.
Since it's opening, the lines have either been terribly long (the queue in it's own is TERRIBLE ... good thing they have vending machines in the queue)

"There's not a lot of corkscrews, not a lot of loop-de-loops and not a lot of jagged movement," said Keon Lombard, 25, of Inglewood. "It's a sturdy ride."
I remember someone pointing out to me, that sometimes when a train goes over the top, the entire track (at that part) will sway ... how's that for sturdy! You would think that $16 million would be more sturdy than that!

Other fatal accidents have been attributed to the T-bar restraint, including one when an obese woman fell out of Knott's Perilous Plunge ride in 2001.
Hey ... if she hadn't moved the restraints below her abdomen, which felt more comfortable to her, then maybe she wouldn't have fallen.

Under the new system, an indicator beneath the Xcelerator's lap bar turns from red to green when a rider pulls down the bar. Side bars were doubled to 14 inches.
Well, at least they're allowing the intensity to stay. Unlike Perilous, which now has shoulder harnesses....

Heh, if you ever ride "Motntezooma's Revenge", take a look at the loop when the train travels through it, it shakes a bit, and if you look at the track in the station, it moves forwards and backwards when the ride cycles to keep the tension down.

Come to think of it, lots of stuff sways. Heh. Take a look at almost any rollercoaster, the track will most likely sway. :D:

(for more fun, look at something like Ghostrider, it rattles and shakes when the trains go by. Heh)

Hey kids, don't go getting excited if you see a roller coaster swaying/"vibrating" some. In order to not shatter/crack/break/or experience what's called "catastrophic mechanical failure", these types of structures have to flex. Hell, even flagpoles do it.

Spending my time around the world doing theatrical flying effects, I have to constantly educate people on the limit imposed on them by the immutable laws of the universe.

In the simplest terms possible. "That little wire is gonna hold my weight?"
"Yes."
"How?"
"Physics."
"???"
"Look, it's a 7x19 aircraft cable. 1/8" diameter. It can hold a VW, so don't worry about your damn self."
"Okay!"

:? I used to work at knotts, at the main gate doing ticket sales, guest relations and other odds and ends like information, and ticket taking. There was a fire in the backlot over by boomerang, it was caused by electrical.........I had friends that were back stage when it was sparking. Knotts told the papers it was someone smoking that had started the fire.

I have to say as a DLR CM, visiting KBF is like going to a parallel dimension. You see the employees doing things and you think for a split second... "What the hell?!" Then you just think that it's Knotts and all is well.

But the worst I've seen was a guy giving the all clear on unload at Jaguar while either text messaging or playing a game on his phone. He wasn't even looking to see if it was clear! Just looking down at his phone with his thumb out...

We do that, but you have to convert for it. Most new hires are CTs and after their probational period, about 90 days or three months, they can apply to convert to CR status.

I was suppse to be on the opening crew of Veritgo, but I quit before it was constructed.

Jaguar makes me feel unsafe, it goes so slow around some of those turn that there is no centrifical force to hold you in place (this was year ago since last i was on it) i didn't like being on it, but it was the only one that didn't scare the living daylights out of me at the time.... i had a dream that the steam train ride go turned into a rocket-rods type coaster following the same essential route, i really neeed to go see that park agian, but after the haunt is over.

I agree, going to Knott's is like being in an alternate dimension.

We were in line for Boomerang during Halloween Haunt last night and this ride operator was being completely obnoxious on the microphone. He was constantly interrupting the automated safety spiel, making stupid sound effects on the microphone, telling people on the train as it was coming back into the station "welcome to McDonald's, may I take your order?" My girlfriend kept pointing out all the unsafe stuff at Boomerang alone, like an access gate left wide open for anyone to walk through into the track area, not being able to hear things like "all clear" or "open gates" between the stupid sound effects, the guy at unload flirting with girls at the exit gate and not being readily identifiable as a ride operator.

As much as both of us hate doing it, we ended up putting in a guest complaint for the obnoxious guy on the microphone. There's nothing wrong with trying to have fun doing your job, but that was just plain ridiculous. We got to talk to Rides 1 and of course since both of us were talking to him in amusement/theme park lingo, he asked us, "do you guys work for Disneyland?"

GMC
10-29-2004, 01:34 AM
well as far as being on the mic too much goes, that only thing that's wrong there is interrupting the auto safety speil, the gate should have been shut, and the operator should have been more identifiable. i think it might ruin my life to go there now that i'm a CM, then agian, from what i hear, they're not paid as well, and aren't treated as well either.

Yeah haunt's employees are ridiculous. Often times they simply wear black pants and a black shirt and forget their name tags. These aren't the security/safety employees in the maze, but rather the normal employees working the rides, cleaning, serving food, etc.

Pay at knotts is a joke. Minimum wage. Sure does make me appreciate my $8.24 or $8.99 i make at disney without having to dodge leads and managers who look to give out documents (3 points, but for ANY sort of infraction, even multiple ones for one infraction) like candy! Hell shift leaders at knotts only make $8.50. Disney also washes my clothing for me, gives me paid vacation, allows me opportunity to become part time, and throws parties for cms. Knotts only gave out shitty food for dirt cheap at the cafeterias and maybe a pot luck once in a blue moon. The managers also thing the general manager of the park, Jack, is god, and the general manager's son, who works at the waterpark and during haunt, gets SOOO much special treatment its not even funny. I have seen menu items, boats, and even a game booth run by managers (cause there are no cameras) be named after jack.

Also, you can only pick up your paycheck on the day it is released to you at certain times. Like every other hour for the first 30 minutes. If you can't make it, you need to wait for saturday. For my first 6 months working there they lied and said no direct deposit, then I heard there was!

I loved how the hanging included the annual passholder! "I come twice on sundays!!!" NOW THAT IS SOO F***ING TRUE!

Here's one from my year and a half at the Unberable Farm...

I was working Bigfoot Rapids (I was in Rides there) at Unload. The attraction was moderately crowded at 21 boat operation (it was a warmish day) when all of the sudden the Grouper drops position, comes over, and warns me that there was a guest who was wearing a trash bag (the ride SOP at the time stated that trash bags were not allowed.) She had told him to take the bag off, and he had, but then put it back on immediately after the raft had left He had also been belligerent to the entire loading crew (herself and both loaders) regarding this. Well, I keep an eye on it, and arrange for her to come over and ID the guest about six minutes later, while his raft is on the lift. When he exits the raft, I politely explain to him that the ride rules and procedures strictly prohibit wearing of trash bags and give the official excuse (supposedly it was because trash bags would foul the pumps, but the real reason was so that the Bigfoot Carts would sell more ponchos.) This guest proceded to become belligerient to me as well, saying that he paid his money, and that he could do what he wanted. My response.. "Very well sir. Then I will have to ask you to please do so on a different ride."

"Are you throwing me off?" he asks, almost snarling.

"Yes sir, I am." I reply.

Sometimes, we do get a little measure of revenge.

Well I worked at KBF when I was about 16 (now 24). I miss those days so much fun (I was a teen). I heard they moved the Church and the old berry stand is gone WTF you mean the staple of KBF is gone?
All facts are 8 years old

Fact: The Old Berry stand is haunted

Fact: On the nights the have the park open just for Gays and Lesbians the male employee's stay together while the women are fine by themselves.

Story:

One day at the end of the nigh the park was closing an guest came up to me and asked "where is the exit" I pointed to the front (we where standing by the dino ride) they said "thanks" I did the normal have a great night and drive safe. I turned to continue my rounds and I looked back to see the guest leave to my suprise the guest headed towards Big Foot Rapids. 15 minutes later the same guest came up to me saying it wasn't their. They proceeded to ask me well its night could it be somewhere else. I let them know that we do not move the exit when night comes, it is always in the same exact spot.

I assume they made it.

why do guests ask the stupid questions?

I'll try to think of some more stories.

Oh yeah I miss the Soap Box Durby. Now that was a ride you had control of, what a racer

The Berry Stand was destroyed and thrown out; I understand that it had been moved at least twice to make way for park expansion since it was built. Face it, Cedar Fair doesn't want anything in "their park" that reflects the park's heritage and beginnings. Two reasons the Church of Reflections was moved; 1.) to make it easier for the congregation to get to church without having to hike a long way under security escort, and 2.) to make room for Silver Bullet. I used to get guest complaints that Knott's wasn't as fun as it used to be--all the old, good stuff was gone. The reason Haunted Shack was taken out in '91 was that it couldn't be made accessible to the handicapped (got alot of flak from guests on that one); the law changed back then saying all rides, attractions, etc. had to be made handicap accessible. I checked the Cedar Fair site, and Knott's is their most profitable park; however, if I read the report right, it only made 1% profit on sales last year. Oh, well, I guess a little profit is better than none at all.... I also noted with interest that Cedar Fair has an Ethics section--any of their members/employees that act in an unethical way are in big trouble. Considering the crap and doubletalk that Knott's management gives their employees, it would be interesting to see if they actually would respond to complaints from current and former Knott's employees and give the idiots in management the heave-ho. I'd love to see that! :D:

I have fond memories of KBF when I was younger. We would go to DL and KBF every time we went. The Ghost mine scared the pee out of me and I never went back on it again (wish I would've). I remeber the ghost rocking chairs on the roofs of the ghost town rocking away (They still there?). The trolley that used to cross the street to Independence Hall thing, and there used to be a interactive play island that had weird creatures made of wood and bamboo and you had to do thigs like walk on a conveyor belt and trot fast to make something squirt water (I am sure thats gone) KB Tales Ride that smelled of Boisenberries. My favorite ride next to the car ride thought the little town was the motorbike racing coaster it was so cool. (Do any of these rides still exist), KBF mader as much magic for me as DL did.

OH P.S.: does the mine train and log ride in the mountain still exist and the volcano with the little devil clown you wound up with a cracnk by the cafeteria/chicken patio that would make the mountain blow? Also do they still rob the train?

The rocking chairs on top of the buildings in Ghost Town only appear during Haunt, along with skeletons dressed in rags, but they don't rock. I don't remember the trolley, but you still have to go under the tunnel to get to Independence Hall. The only things I remember from the play island nearby was a rocker toy that squirted water, and a stump with a painted wooden skunk on it; there was a sign in front with the following tongue-twister: The skunk sat on the stump. The stump thought the skunk stunk. The skunk thought the stump stunk. As for Knott's Bear-y Tales, that has been replaced with a couple of other rides, most recently Kingdom of the Dinosaurs, which was taken out over a year ago and is being replaced by a Johnny Rocket's. The car ride (Soapbox Racers) and motorbike ride are gone. Now for the good news: The Calico Mine Ride and Log Ride are still there! And as I was a Train Conductor on the Calico Railroad, I can assure you that yes, they still do rob the train! If you think it's been awhile since you were last at Knott's, I haven't been there as a guest in 25 years, and thus missed alot of rides. There used to be a mule-pulled carousel; it consisted of porch-swing-like seats with a chain in front as a restraint system, and it was operated by an old fellow and his mule. To start the ride, after everyone was seated with the chain across, the man would step up on a small platform behind the mule, take the reins, and by means of the reins, plus short whistles and clicks, he would control the mule, getting it to walk in a circle, pulling the contraption around, with centrifugal force keeping you in the seat. It was fun, unique and simple. I imagine they took that out when either the man or the mule died. They also had a burro ride, the last time I rode it was during my last trip there, the weight requirement was 170 lbs., maximum. I think at that time I was about 5-10 pounds below the weight limit; I couldn't ride it now. Like I said earlier, Cedar Fair is just destroying that park. The missions displays are said to be in storage, but are in poor condition. To see what all is at Knott's nowadays, check their website at www.knotts.com. But the place is so mismanaged, the new people are so poorly trained, I wouldn't go there.

Yeah, Im lucky so far. Im handling the stupidity well, and Ive dealt with things like this when I reffed AYSO. Trust me, I lost my sanity long ago reffing soccer. :p:

Oh, boy. I'm sure we could trade some interesting stories about that. I refereed two state tournaments in Massachusetts. You think they get bad during normal games, watch what they do when the word "championship" is involved.

I never got death threats, though. Have feared for my safety on a few occasions, though. Fortunately, there were usually a lot of field supervisors around on these occasions.
