So glad to find this site to vent out some of the unbelievable stories that our guests supply us with. I am a current cast member at DHS and currently working at the new attraction Toystory Midway Mania. Before our various openings for cast, and passholders there was a film shoot for all the publicity people. I was standing there and one of the actors/extras aske me is she could ask me a question. I said sure feel free.
"Can you tell me when they will be taking all of this down and moving this to the Magic Kingdom?"
She thought the entire ride was just a set to be used for this publicily event. I told her Disney has lots of magic but not that much. That this was the newest attraction and it would be staying here at Disney's Hollywood Studios.

Can't blame her, there are only so many times I could visit DHS and DAK in a 5-year span, while hitting the MK is something I could practically do every day. It's irksome that they put really good new rides (like the Matterhorn one at DAK) which means that you've got to go there just to see that new ride...

Ummm....that's why they do it. If a park has low attendance, they put in a couple of really good, repeatable rides and keep doing it until the attendance goes up. It serves two purposes, it makes the park with low attendance justified in being open and it alleviates crowds in the high attendance parks.

I know, I know... but there's a reason attendance isn't so hot at those "other" parks.

I hit all the parks every trip, usually one and a half to two days each and might even pop in for a couple of hours to hit my favorites on another day. Every trip to DL I do both DL and DCA, there are things at all the parks I like to do so i visit all of them. I think TSMM is a great addition to DHS and DCA and look forward to riding at both parks.

The thing is, Epcot, Animal Kingdom (and to some extent) Hollywood Disney are pretty huge places but with not a lot to see. Yeah, at some point they'll hit saturation point and there will be a lot of rides to choose from, but when I went to AK something like in the first year it opened, there wasn't a heck of a lot to see and the dinosaur ride was misbehaving. Gives you a bad taste, esp. when it's 110 degrees and humid ;-)

Depending on the last time you went on Safari, we have animals now. You will always see animals. You won't see all of them (I can guarantee you won't see the Stanley Crane, since we don't have any), and even if they're out you'd be amazing at how even the giraffes can hide. But you will always see some animals. I really like the rest of AK, but the Safari is what makes the park worth it.

Exactly....It is called marketing. Build it and they will come to quote "Field of Dreams" PSST,,,btw..it is Expedition Everest at AK, Matterhorn is at DL in California. Easy to confuse I am sure, it took me a sec to realize what you were talking about.

You would be surprised how much there actually IS to see if you take time to stop and smell the roses or at least look up or down or to your left or right. WDW Disney parks have so many hidden treasures that it would literlly take 6 months to a year to see them all.
But seriously DUDE, you sound like my parents. They think WDW is stupid and boring because they also visited AK in the first few years it was built. Then again, they dont comprehend that AK is only one part of a very large park..cant tell them otherwise.. Well, it wasnt and still isnt really finished being built so of course it didnt seem very exciting then. I challenge you to go back now and see the difference. I have a similar situation with a close friend. He apparently visited AK *before* it opened to the public. He had a friend on the opening crew for the park (merchandise, I believe), and she brought him as her guest on a Cast Preview day. The safari wasn't open, Asia was almost a year away from opening, and the park was swarming with tons of little kids (which he's not too fond of in the first place) and everyone trying to get access to what little was available. He ended up leaving after only seeing ITTBAB because he just needed to get out of there. So he went to a different park for the rest of the day.
Needless to say, I have yet to get him back to the park. He LOVES the other three parks, but has no real desire to return to AK. (Though he did say he really liked ITTBAB) Perhaps now with EE open I'll get him in there.

Thanks for the Welcome! DHS needed this attraction desperately and I will debate for hours with anyone that thinks it should have gone to another park. DHS has been lacking rides for kids since it opened. I really don't know how many small kids really appreciate Jimmy Cagney in the Great Movie Ride.
Tower, Coaster, Star Tours all having height requirements. Only leaves a playground, muppets, the backlot tour, and all of our shows to see. Not only did Disney provide an amazing ride for all ages but the changes on Mickey Avenue changing it to Pixar Place are stunning.
And hey don't pick on my brothers and sisters at DAK I love that park and will always feel that it would have been Walt's favorite.

DHS has frequently been the kid's favorite, though. If you think about it, the attractions there are from within the lifetime of most of the kids. Beauty & the Beast, Little Mermaid, Playhouse Disney, even the Muppets (Sesame Street) are within their lifetime or at least familiar due to DVD and TV viewing. MK has the more "classic" films and characters, which they know but much in the same way we "know" Cagney and Bogart. And GMR has Wizard of Oz, which most kids know pretty well too. The other stuff they take or leave, but I've had several kids at DHS tell me they saw the Wicked Witch of the West ride.
I loved DAK from the day it opened for cast previews too. I'm always amused by people who claim there's nothing to do at DAK or DHS. Obviously, if you only go to the park to ride rides, especially if you only enjoy "thrill" rides or big ticket rides, there's not much to do. But I could ALWAYS make a full day out of DAK or DHS. There are top of the line shows at both parks, some great walk through attractions, and tons of street atmosphere. Both have fun places to explore (hidden nature trails, a museum of movie memorabilia, etc.) and lots of "ambiance."

Believe me I love my park and would not want to work at any other. The atmosphere of DHS is my favorite. But is just seems the majority of our guests want rides. I don't know how many times I have been bombarded by questions where are the rides for kids? But it does not take me long to tell them about the things that they most likely have missed. I tell them schedule your day around the shows, and fast pass your favorites, and look for those opportune times to hit those ongoing things that rarely have long lines. I always hope that they leave satisfied with their day.

I think that AK has some of the most enjoyable shows on property. We just love Festival of the Lion King and the new Nemo show. I also think that the Character Grove is the best character meet/greet area at any of the parks. It's shady, there are misters to cool things off, and the background music is fantastic. And since you are viewing most of the attractions at your own pace, it's easier to enjoy the themeing. The Maharaja Jungle Trek makes you feel like you are actually in India.
DisKarma - We are very excited about the new Midway Mania ride. It will be a great addition to DHS. Did they move the Mickey meet/greet? It was a great place to see Mickey in an interesting costume and was never really busy so you could spend some time with him.

LOL...at least your friend realizes that the other parks exist as seperate entities. No matter if I talk till I am blue in the face and bring out a map with all the parks clearly marked, I cant convince my parents that the AK is only part of WDW and not the whole park. The conversation usually goes like this. "we dont like WDW" But you have only been to AK, there are 3 other parks. "no, we have been to WDW and we dont like it, it is boring and stupid (their actual words not mine..lol) " So I explain it like this...Pgh (their area) is made up of small neighborhoods but they all have the Pgh as their address. Or I say it is like a big circle with smaller circles inside -AK, MK, etc being the smaller circles. SIGH, they still dont get it. OY!
As for kids stuff at the Studios and AK, my 5 yr old DD likes anything she gets to do but I can see less adventerous(sp?) children ..and adults for that matter finding it boring. Fun is what you make it. Disney is not a thrill park, it is a THEME park. Meghyn (at 4.5) actually really liked the drawing lesson at the Studios. LOL, maybe I have a future animater on my hands.

Very good news for you they have moved the Mickey meet and greet inside the Magic of Animation. So you have a great place to cool off and see Mickey at the same time.
Alot of people miss out on the Magic of Animation and I think it is one of our most under appreciated attractions. And the cool thing about the Animation Academy is that you may draw a different character each time you come in. Love how they make the drawing seem so simple, who knows how many future animators will come out of visiting there.

The Animation Academy is my favorite!! I have a big pile of drawings from there, and last time I was there, in December, the woman teaching the class remembered me, even though it had been 4 months since I had last been there, and 9 since I lived down there. She was so happy, though, because we were going to draw a new view of Stitch, and she knew I wouldn't have drawn it before. lol. I can't wait until I can go there again.

I love KS and can ride it over and over again. I just want someone to wake up the lion so I can see him do something more than sleep.
The first time I went to AK I only went for half a day and hit Dinosoaur, and KS and just wandered around a bit because I was short on time and wanted to hit MK that day. My next trip my buddy Joe went with me and he used to own a pet shop and has his own zoo going at home so we ended up spending a full dat there and I went back for most of a second day. I wandered through some of the trails and saw lots of animals I had missed before so my next trip I wanted to spend a little more time there. I also rode just about everything and took pics of EE being built. My last trip I found out I had been missing more stuff so along with riding EE I went and found the tigers and big fruit bats. My next trip I plan on at least one full day at AK, maybe two and KS is number one on my list for a few rides. I have always done it first thing in the morning or before noon so I want to try late afternoon also. I am also looking forward to seeing the Nemo show.
For DHS I havent seen B&B show so i plan on seeing it and lights motors action I missed last trip so thats high on my list. I have seen the indy show twice and enjoyed it and ToT is one of my all time favorites so there will be multipal rides on it.
My GF likes EPCOT the most so we ended up spending several days last trip there but we didnt see any of the shows in WS so i am going to try to see as many as I can and I want to ride the new Nemo ride there also. Plus I love Turtle talk with Crush.

I was only ever at Animal Kingdom once, in 98. We skipped Countdown to Extinction cause my mom thought it was a coaster (she's since been in Indy at DLR and now wants to go on Countdown next time she's in Florida... whenever that might be.) We spent a whole day there, and the only rides I remember going on were Kilimanjaro Safari... I'm guessing when it had fewer animals because I only remember seeing Lions Sunbathing, and some elephants.... I have a vague recollection of some blue-butt baboons, but that might have been the Bronx Zoo. I'm sure there were others I probably didn't remember, but I do remember thinking the area must be huge because so many of the Animals were hiding. Anyhow... we went on that, and Kali River Rapids. *Checks things.*You know what... my last trip must have been 99, because Asia wasn't open in 98 and I know I went on Kali.
Anyhow... even with just those rides there was plenty to do there. Rafiki's Planet watch... Tough to be a Bug, the Lion King show... I'm really looking forward to going back there in November... and I won't be going on Expidition Everest, because I don't do coasters (except Space Mountain.)

Well, it serves me right for taking my 5months-pregnant wife for the AK opening year visit in the middle of summer. The animals were hiding and the lines were HUGE.
I know AK was built to compete with Busch Gardens in a way, but it lacked the magic of the MK. I love animals and all, but as far as entertainment value goes, Jungle Cruise has a lot of merit!

Don't lump me in with your PARENTS for crying out loud, they're old and wrinkly!! :p: We had plenty of time to stop and smell everything because the lines were so freaking enormous. MK was exciting the first year Asia opened, AK not so much. Anyway I LOVE WDW (been coming there every year since it opened and we live 1200 miles away) and yes, I'm planning on revisiting AK with my kids at some point. BTW, "Tough to be a Bug" was working flawlessly that day even if the dinos weren't.

That's roughly the time I went, too, because I did go on the newly-opened Kali rapids ride (with the 1.5hr lineup, to boot). My point about DAK vs MK (circa 1999) is that once you've done those rides, you're done for a WHILE. Might as well go to a dedicated zoo or animal park after that, while you could go to MK a million times and never get bored. Is part of it that you're surrounded by trees in DAK while there are a million pieces of engaging architecture in MK? Who knows, but the sheer number of rides in MK must be a factor.
I think what really hits the attendance numbers of these ancillary parks aren't so much the concept and execution (although what could possibly top MK?) but the repeatability of the experience. After having gone thru DAK, I didn't feel compelled to go back again for a long time. Maybe you guys are right and all it needs is more rides.
But now I think it's time I made a revisit to AK again and because it's almost been 10 years and because my kids are young and love animals - they will definitely enjoy it. We'll just have to plan ahead to hit the big lines with fast passes and go on a day when it's (relatively) quieter.

DAK was the first park I ever got to really explore, and it is my parents' favorite. I could Festival and Nemo all day. I also love the Jungle Trek and KS. I have two pictures from that first day: one is at the plexiglass window at the Jungle Trek, there is no visible barrier and it looks like the picture was taken right in front of the tiger in the bushes. The other one is from KS. It's a picture of a mama and baby elephant infront of a baobob tree next to a watering hole. You can see their reflections in the water. I have both of these framed on my kitchen wall and everybody loves them.

Don't revoke my SGT membership just yet. I was warned off by people who said that they had bad reactions to the plant life/trees etc due to their asthma, that's why I haven't gone yet.
Maybe I'm just waiting until the day that Wallaby can show it to us the way it is meant to be seen LOL
Is the Animation Academy the same at DL as in WDW? We just did that for the first time this past trip and I LOVED it even though I couldn't really see that well.
In fact, this story was meant for my trip blog but since I don't think I'm ever going to get it written due to my bad eyes and ever dwindling computer time, here goes. We were about to go into the animation building at DHA and they had just loaded a full show. So a guy in a hawaiian style shirt is at turnstiles and asks if we want to wait. I noticed his costume was different from all the other CMs at the location and figured he was breaking someone (he was LOL) and we got to talking. I found out only at the end that he was a teacher for the drawing class!
He was trying to convince me that I was still healthy enough to be a casual temporary LOL. He kept saying "We need you down here! We'll find a place to put you that you can handle!" and I assured him if I was still healthy enough to work anywhere, WDW would be where I'd go.
So we went in and watched the show, which I loved because I love Mushu (am I wrong, or was there a really quick joke in that show about Eliot from Pete's Dragon being Mushu's "husband"? I swear I heard it, but then I may be completely nuts. I think most of the audience missed it)
We went thru and of course my love affair with Wall-E began the moment I saw his maquette in the case- and then we went to do the drawing class. My husband drew a really cool stitch! Well after the show, our friend from turnstiles comes in- he's teaching the next class and asks if we wanted to stay! I told him that I couldn't see with one eye and he told me to pick the absolute best seat for me to see in- and then he asked me to pick the character to draw for the next show. I picked Mickey :) While we waited for the guests to come out of the next show, he took out his personal pin collection and handed the binder to me so I could look at them all! He had some amazing pins. So much fun.
After the class, he signed the Mickey he drew for the class, and rolled it up and gave it to me. I about cried. I asked if I could get a pic with him and he graciously posed- what a wonderful CM. We won't forget him and Mickey will soon be framed and hanging in my kitchen.

Hey, thanks Wombat! That's good to know, one day I'll get really brave and all inhaler-d up and go out there. Thing that scared me off most was a lady I talked to at a resort gift shop who told me she'd worked there as part of the opening cast and developed terrible asthma because of the grass that was used on some of the buildings , roofs? I don't remember. But she got so bad they had to transfer her to a resort gift shop and she said to me that if I had asthma that there were triggers aplenty at AK.

I LOVE DAK! We like to do the nature/animal viewing walks and of course the coolest attraction: KSR! If I could have I would have done Kali River rapids. Too much jostling for my back last trip. Maybe next year. We enjoyed "Nemo, the Musical" and I adore Festival of the Lion King and of course meeting the characters over in Camp Minnie-Mickey. There is so much to see and do there all over DAK. There are creatures just about everywhere you look.
When we make the move to Florida and get hired on, I would LOVE to work with the big critters in DAK. With my Vet Tech degree, I could eventually work my way in there. I would not mind shoveling poo or cutting up vegies in the kitchen for their meals to get my foot in the door. I will do what it takes to work there with those creatures.
We did the backstage tour of DAK in 2006 and got to see where they prepped the food. We also got a great tour of the hospital and medical area, as well as all the cool backstage areas that have to do with the care and housing of the creatures. That would be my dream job!:)
Or I could go to DHS and work for Radio Disney. Since I worked in the Broadcasting business for nearly 20 yrs, I could do it for Disney. That would be fun. I am not sure how much is done out of the studios and how much out of Texas, but it could be interesting to get back into the broadcasting biz in some capacity.
I enjoy going to the Studios Park as well. LOVE the GMR and Car stunt show. Also my very fave, Beauty and the Beast! Of course! It is wonderful.
It is a fun Park just to walk around and look at. Lots to see. And of course the greatest exhibit of all time, which should be in a building as you enter the gate and everyone should be made to see it;), One Man's Dream!
There are kids and even older folks who don't even know about Walt Disney, who he was or what he did.. They just know they like to ride a roller coaster in a Park with his name on the gate! The history is so marvelous and it is a wonderful display. I would love to see it in a place of honor up close to the front or over at Magic Kingdom in Town Square. It should be a requirement to see this display and film to attend the Parks. LOL! :p:
It would be great if some of those who know nothing of the history could learn a little about the how and why of Disneyland and WDW and the rest of the Disney empire!
I just know that I do not want to work retail or food again. I did those jobs between radio station gigs and I have had enough of retail. If I could work in the kitchen, that would not be so bad, but I would not want to do it for long and never in my life will I work as a waitress. UH-UH! No waiting on hungry, tired folks at a hot and humid Disney Park! OH HELL NO!!!!!:hyper:
My other dream position is to be a Plaid! I would have fun with that! Or a friend of the characters! But I would need to work with some of the tall characters tho!;)
It will be interesting to see what comes about with our dream of working part time at WDW when we finally get our butts moved down there. I cannot wait to live in Florida. I would be there now if I could. It is thunderstorm season in Colorado and we have had tornado warnings for the past couple days. Big thunder and lightening, but so far no rain with it. Just dry hot T-storms. It has been pretty warm the last couple days and the AC in our house took a little vacation! If it runs too long, the thing freeezes up asnd you have to wait til it melts and then it will run again. So now we are turning it off at night and it is doing better. For two days, the house was like hell, oh wait, that's right, I do live in Hell! I just want to be in Florida right now enjoying the sights and sounds and smells of WDW! And the fireworks!!!!
Anyway, I digress as usual and need to go lie down. My time is up for the afternoon session of computer time. Be back in the A.M. :nyah:

I was warned off by people who said that they had bad reactions to the plant life/trees etc due to their asthma, that's why I haven't gone yet.
You know, my husband has the same problem. He does great in every other park, but when he gets to Animal Kingdom, his sinuses go nuts. He bought one of those inhaler thingees at CVS and every time we go, he uses those and he's fine. It's Benzadrine or something...smells like a combination of lavender and old socks. But it works beautifully. We always make sure to bring at least 3 of those when we go to Disney. One for use, one backup, and one backup for the backup.

That's the same thing I tell people when they ask if they should backup their computer data.

The two best allergy OTC meds I've used were Nasalcrom nasal spray, and the dissolving Alavert. Alavert I think is the nicest medicine I've ever taken. No bad taste, dissolves quickly and easily, works well, no drowsiness, etc..

Then you do understand the concept of backup the data you backed upped with a backup.
I was in the storage biz. Our biggest system held about 1.5 PB.

I got a call from a friend asking me to help him tow his car home because the transmission had blown up. "What happened?" I asked.
"I got into race. When the light turned green I shifted into L for Leap. Then I shifted into D for Drag. I was barely ahead of the other car so I shifted into R for Race and that's when the trans blew up."

So we went in and watched the show, which I loved because I love Mushu (am I wrong, or was there a really quick joke in that show about Eliot from Pete's Dragon being Mushu's "husband"? I swear I heard it, but then I may be completely nuts. I think most of the audience missed it)
The line Mushu delivers is "Me and my cousin, Eliot the Dragon ..."
After the class, he signed the Mickey he drew for the class, and rolled it up and gave it to me. I about cried. I asked if I could get a pic with him and he graciously posed- what a wonderful CM. We won't forget him and Mickey will soon be framed and hanging in my kitchen.
Do you happen to remember his name?
