Long time lurker, First time poster. Sorry if this is the wrong forum
I was reading the rec.arts.disney.parks newsgroup today and read that one of members, Randy B, suffered a fatal heart attack in his sleep late Friday or early Saturday.
I have known Randy for about 7 years and he was a real nice guy. He will be missed

This was posted on DisBoards (in the Community Board):
Greetings:
I'm a friend of Randy Berbaum (his work supervisor), who I know has made
many trips to Disney World and frequented UseNet groups and more....just
about anything related to Disney.
I don't know Randy's usual "hangouts", but did find a couple of messages
he posted on this group. I'm hoping Randy's friends might see this and
pass this along to others.
I am very sad to report that Randy passed away suddenly, sometime Friday
night or very early Saturday morning. The coroner's preliminary report
suggests Randy suffered a massive heart attack, while in bed. An
autopsy is planned for today (Monday).
Randy dearly loved his Disney adventures. He lived for his semi-annual
trips. I was happy to approve extended vacations for him, so that he
could live his dream.
He was a great guy, whom I had the pleasure of working with for more
than 20 years.
We will miss him here...and I know his Disney friends will miss him,
too.
If any of Randy's friends would like more information, such as where to
send flowers or cards, please feel free to contact me directly. His
family says details regarding funeral arrangemnts will be made as soon
as the coroner releases Randy to his parents.
Thank You,

Oh, I am so sad to hear this. I am speechless.
Rest in peace, Randy, thank you for being a part of our little community here. I will think of you always this way- that you're looking down on the real monorail loop anytime you want now, from a vantage point high above it. *tears*

Oh my god.. That's horrible.
What a way to go, and at such a young age, too. :(. It's things like this that really put it all into perspective, eh?
We'll miss you, Randy. Enjoy that big, SG-free, Disney park in the sky :D:.

I had forgotten about Randy's monorail setup at the Fort. Wish I could have met him in person. He seemed like such a great guy.
You are right Bru, he is probably looking down at his favorite place right now. Well said.

Hello, everyone.
I am Randy's cousin, and our entire family is so grateful for the
outpouring support from your posts. The funeral arrangements have not
been made yet, but when they are I will let all of you know. I will be
printing this thread off and will pass it on to his parents, so we may
use some of your comments about Randy for his service. Randy was not
one to talk much, but when he did, it was about Disney and all of the
friends he had met online. So thank you for bringing joy to his life.
Thank you again.

Hey everyone,
I emailed Mr. Pritchard last night and he was kind enough to supply an address to me where people can send notes to Randy's family. He told me to please feel free to share it with Randy's friends here because he thought it would be good for the family to know how many friends he had in so many different places.
If you'd like to send a card or anything, please PM me and I'll get the address to you ASAP.
I want to make them something in addition to the card. . .but it might take me a couple weeks. . . but I already have a plan in mind.

In Honor of and to honor the memory of a man my husband and I only knew on this board today May 20, 2008, we rode on the train and the Monorail in two full circles, one each... Starting out on the train at the Main Street Station, and returning there, and then from there we walked to the monorail. I took some pictures of Monorail Red, still undergoing Testing, but did ride on a monorail with the Year Of A Million Dreams motif on it, from Tomorrowland, to Downtown Disney and back to Tomorrowland.
I have a feeling Randy would have loved to ride on Monorail Red... When I get the chance to, my first ride will be for him...

Randy was one of my favorite posters here - his comments were always so interesting as he analyzed a situation and came up with a fascinating solution to just about any problem. He will truly be missed. I'm sorry I never had the chance to meet him in person. We'll ride the monorail for him in November.

I've had something I was going to tell you about for a few weeks now, and I think this is the perfect place to do it. A few here know about this, so now I am coming out with it to everyone. What I am about to tell you about, I was going to do anyway, but now I will be doing it here in honor of Randy.
You see, on June 10th, I will have six months in at Safari. I love the attraction, but I have come to understand what many here have told me, about how working the Safari really saps every ounce of energy you have from your body. Safari has a very high transfer rate, and many people who transfer out still love the attraction, but they are physically and mentally exhausted. For reference, I generally prefer to work as many hours as the company will allow (in buses I took only one ER because I was sick), and at Safari I try for an ER at least once a week, even if I can't go home and instead I go and ride around on other peoples' safaris, or walk around the Animal Kingdom, or whatever.
On June 10th, I will be putting in for a transfer, and I know they are actively looking for people in this area... it's even mentioned on the job line. I know several of the managers from when I was in buses, and they seem to generally like me, and the feeling is mutual. It's something I have wanted to do since I was 15, and now I think it is high time to follow this dream. Maybe not originally, but now in honor of our friend Randy, I am going to be applying for and making a transfer into Monorails. Whenever a member of SGT gets on a train with me, I would like to have something special we can do, in honor of Randy. I wish I could have had him in the front cab with me, I know he would have loved it.
So those that knew Randy personally, if you have any ideas something we can do in that front cab when members of SGT join me there, please let me know.

Did Randy have a favorite line or joke that you could add in? Or maybe you can toss in the "French toast and nachos" line after they close the doors, just in case for those who wanted to know what that second line really ment in spanish, just a thought.

Just signed OL & read this unexpected, very sad news. Words seem hollow & do not come easily. Randy was always "our" level headed, able to rephrase the negative into a positive, explain in detail, add great laughter, & step in & sooth poster. He was strong, astute, intelligent, yet humble. Wish I had told you how very much I depended on you Randy. Enjoy WDW & all that is Disney from Heaven. You are one of THE BEST! Rest In Peace my poster friend.

Just for posterity, I would like to play Randy's last post here. Discussing Disneyland's Monorail Red, after the discussion was started about the... mishap, he responded with his usual wit and wisdom. Join me in shedding a tear while simultaneously laughing at what he had to say and how he chose to say it:
I can hear the reaming out all the way out here in Illinois.
"NOW you know why ANY changes and modifications MUST be doccumented and corrected on the blueprints!
But, Boss, we just trimmed a little unneccissary flashing.
I SAID ALL MODIFICATIONS MUST BE DOCCUMENTED!!!"
Sure makes for a good object lession to people in MANY industries. I may have to mention this to some of the engineers around here at the radio station. Maybe I can convince them that NO detail is too small to properly doccument.

Big W- maybe when you have an SGTer in the front cab of your monorail with you for a ride, the call sign of that train can be "The Randy B" in his honor, the way any airplane the President flys on is called Air Force One.

But I absolutely love the idea.
We're commissioning a new image that will soon appear as an avatar for any member of the board who passes on. It's the image of Mickey, where his head is the world and he is shedding a tear at Walt's death. We've done some cropping, and it will look like this:

Some modifications will follow, to personalize it a bit.

Although, if you could get approval for painting "In Memory of Randy B" on the side of all the monorails, that would be great :D (If not, then make a few stickers and put them right on the tip of their noses with the in memory of Randy on it)
Oh, idea just popped in my head! Have a few "Hidden Randy's" make their way on the monorails or stations, etc :D

Coming from Safari where we joke about the Helmeted Guinea Fowl (Randy, I'm sorry for bringing mention of them in this thread) going 10-7 (and one of them did of old age last week, so we're down to 2), it just makes it just a little too... something.

Only thing CF is I don't remember where the drawing came from originally. It's been passed from computer to computer in my house for so many years but I know it was from a drawing I found somewhere originally posted online (meaning I didn't draw it).
I did another one using the pic from the insert that comes with the monorail train toy models (which Randy loved so much) but I don't know if Disney would object or not- but anyway here it is- it's up to you if you want to post them I don't claim any ownership of the images, I just put a little text on them, cause they seemed fitting. . .

Published in The News-Gazette on 5/22/2008.
You may have already been told this, as I understand Randy’s sister has been in touch with some of you…but she found many of the replies to my posting regarding Randy’s passing, on the RADP newsgroup. She printed them out and gave them to Randy’s mom. His mom was very touched by the number of messages, and by the warm and kind things everyone said about her son. She said that it “helped to take some of the sadness away.”
You all seem like a pretty special group of people. I’d say Randy was lucky to have known you.
Best Regards,

This is the blanket I made for Randy's parents. It's hanging up right now drying, and hopefully with any luck will be in the mail to them tomorrow.
It's a good sized afghan, white yarn made into puffy stitches- in my mind signifying clouds in Heaven and I attempted to make a little monorail and embroidered it on. Might be a little crooked but I am working with one eye and that has taken a toll on my skills. My family did a QC check for me and insisted it looks enough like a monorail to send.
I just hope that they know how much we'll miss Randy when they see it. I took the liberty of signing "Bru and all the regulars at SGT" on the card that I wrote to go in with it- which said that we will miss Randy a lot and that he will always be remembered, for his love of monorails, among many things.
I positioned "Monorail Gold" near the upper left side of the blanket- indicating Randy remains in our hearts. I explained that on the card too.
I just hope they like it. I wish there was more I could do. At least it's something.

Thanks ktulu, Wazzup and KingdomKat. It's funny- usually I have a horrible time whenever I try to embroider anything onto a blanket with the yarn getting tangled as I'm sewing- but it did not do that this time. At the end, I looked up and said "Thanks, Randy," cause I definitely felt as if somebody was helping me!
I'm so glad my monorail looks like a monorail. My family is now asking me to work on a little 'sampler' for our wall in our kitchen with different colored ones. I told them when my eyes recover I'll think about it. I wish you could see the detail of the windows, I sewed black yarn in behind them and they look really 3 d up close.
If anyone would specifically like me to include them on the list of "regulars" I can add a second note in before I go to the PO tomorrow. Just post here.
ktulu- you're already there :)

Bru- it is truly a work of art and I'm amazed at the monorail you added. If You want to put my name on the card too, that would be great, and mean a lot to me.
I will remember Randy everytime I ride the Monorail, and said a little tribute when I was at Disneyland last weekend.

that is so thoughtful, DisneyMom. . .
I've added you all to the card. I hope it'll help Randy's family to know how many friends he had here. . .sometimes the internet seems like such a shadow world, but times like this remind you just how real the people are, and you all are really sweet.

I'm one of the people on RADP that sent a check for Rodney to pass on to WILL. If you had not heard over $1,200 was collected and sent to the NPR station where he had worked for 20 years.

I was gone when this thread started and I just found this thread and I am speechless. I cannot believe it! Our Randy! He was such a huge part of our daily posts and discusssions here. I feel like I've lost a family member. I always told him he and I were twin sister and brother from different mothers. We had so much in common.
I had heard about this on another site, but had no idea it was our Randy...oh my...:(
A sad day...:(

That's awesome!!! I know that will really mean a lot to those he worked with for such a long time. Some, he had worked with for decades.
I mailed off the blanket yesterday afternoon, shouldn't be a long trip from here to there and hopefully they may even get it tomorrow.
Notatourist was the last person I was able to see a message from to add before I left so my apologies to the Bubble ladies- if I had mailed it later I absolutely would have added you two of course :( The address for his family is in this thread tho so anyone who didn't get named on the card I sent can surely send one too if they want to. Thank you so much for your kind words- I felt it was the least I could do for someone who was such a part of our community and will be so sadly missed.
hugs to all

Bru, That was beautiful! I am sure it will mean a lot to his family. Randy is surely watching from Heaven and I know he loves it!
I am still in shock. I just cannot believe it. I just found this thread this morning and I am blown away.
We miss you Randy!

not to worry bru...with the address available to all i'm sure the family will be receiving many cards from randy's online friends...but i'm pretty sure they'll understand that more people than are mentioned on the card have feelings behind it too :)

Hi everyone!
I am re-visiting all of the boards about my cousin, Randy, because my Aunt (Randy's mother) lost the original ones that I printed out for her. Your kind words and comments helped my Aunt many nights when she couldn't sleep; she would get up, grab the stack of printed-out posts, and read them again and again. We read some of the posts at the service we had for him, and there were many tears shed in response to your outpouring of support and kindness.
I mentioned Albino Pygmy's idea of some kind of a memorial on a monorail for Randy, and people gasped they were so thrilled and touched. Did anything come of this possibility?
Thanks again everyone. You are an amazing, kind-spirited group. I am honored to have met you through these posts.

It was the least I could do, we all miss, and will miss Randy so much.
I hate to bother you to ask but if you see this, if you talk to you aunt could you find out if the blanket arrived safely? i wrote my return address very messily on purpose (PO needs return addy to ship- but I try to do these things as stealthily as possible) then I realized that I may never know if they received it.
I can only hope that the box arrived safely, it didn't have too far to go.
You all remain in my thoughts. I think of Randy every day when I look at the Monorail models in my kitchen and think that my set up will never be as cool as his was. He was the monorail master.
I still want to try his wax paper and battery operated lights trick to illuminate my Contemporary, first chance I get.

Personal question, but if you guys had him cremated and didn't bury his remains yet, send him to me or bring him to Disney World after I've been trained and I'd love to take him on one last front cab ride.
Till the next rendezous with destiny... This ones for you

Shorty82,
Moe wants to know if we can take the warm temps from FL and take them back here to freezing cold CA? The 40 degree temps in Poway are bad enough.
Watch for corn on the cob at the turkey carts. My friend mentioned it to me. What next can Disney kill us off with? I have seen the beef tamales and they are gross. My friend sells turkey legs on the hub near the castle.
Flavors of cob: chile lime and butter with salt. If you have had a turkey leg, those are coated in salt. Both can lead to a heart attack.

She lives a few blocks away from Sam's Club. She lives behind Walmart. She watches her patients out towards Borona Casino. Also she has another family that lives 15 minutes NW of Poway in a new construction site area.:o:

Oh, I know that Walmart, that is the one we go to. (No Sams club in Poway)
the Barona casino is a bit of a drive up the highway, but a nice one!
Sadly, the new construction that you describe is probably re-building from the fires! We had some friends that lost their house during the fires two years ago!
And yes its getting chilly!! I was up at 4 this morning, and it was about 50 in our back yard!! Brrrrr!!!

We saw 59 degrees once last winter. I had to dig out some long pants to wear.
