View Full Version : Oldest age to wear costumes?

Just recently, I had seen two grown women in full princess dresses at the Magic Kingdom. Is this a new thing now? I know that only children 10 and under can wear costumes to the Parks. The first woman looked as if she went to the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique and got the whole she-bang, Snow White gown and all. Second woman was in a long pink princess dress with a crown and wand, she was fixing her hair in the bathroom mirror.

Did they have kids around? or maybe they were meeting their famlies for a P&P experience?
DW and I are consider going to a MNSSHP our next trip, and are trying to figure out if we want to wear a costume, and just WHAT we should go as...

For special events such as P&P or Halloween, adults are allowed to wear costumes. On the day of I think they also can in that park. However, during normal days adults are not allowed to. If an adult wears a costume that looks like a Disney costume (this is especially true for Star Wars Weekends) during a sanctioned event they have to agree to not pose for pictures or sign autographs as a Disney character. If an adult shows up in a costume during a regular day they are supposed to be directed to change clothing. I'm surprised they weren't.

Was it during a special event (mnsshp or P&P)? If not, adults can not be in costumes in the parks.

Hmmm, is that right? I mean, obviously no one will mistake me for Belle or Alice, but I don't see the harm in it.
I know it sounds silly, but there are times when I get in that mood that I would like to go to Disneyland dressed like a character. I have seen teenagers wearing the princess costumes.
Will you get stopped at the front gate and not let in? How does it work? Cause you know, I sense a challenge in my future.
What if it is a disabled adult dressed up? How do you handle that?

Yeah, it would be fun to dress as a Princess, and I am pretty sure that NO one is going to mistake the overweight, middle-aged woman in the wheelchair as one of the *real* Princesses! ;)
Personally I would love to dress as Belle for one day and get treated as Belle, (after Beast's transformation of course) for one day. Ahhhhhhhhhh...I can dream, right.:belleg:

They wish! "Snow White" Looked like a reject from some punk girl band with her colored hair extensions and tired face. The one in pink was a middle aged woman trapped in an 80's prom gown and seemed as if she was trying too hard to look like she was young.

No adults are supposed to be allowed to wear costumes. I personally agree with the policy. I'm sure 99% of the people look nothing like the princesses, but if they are in any way dressed up there will always be guests who mistake them for a Disney character. Just look at the number of guests who wait in line for a character whose name they don't even know. Besides that, you don't want to get into judgment calls of whether or not somebody looks enough like a character to be precluded from wearing a costume. You'll have people claiming discrimination because they are too pretty, like those airheads who got thrown off the plane for picking a flight and swear it's because they're too pretty .

Maybe they're related to Linda Skywalker and dress up because they think THEY are the Princesses. Kinda like the late Clayton Moore used to always wear his Lone Ranger mask all the time. Some people are so delusional they think they are whoever they think they are, even if they don't look anything like whoever it is they're supposed to be.

A couple of problems. Since he is not a CM, he could cause problems by being mean or short with some little kid who dosn't know the difference between a CM at the park and a guest.
Also, I hate to bring it up, but pedophiles put themselves in a position that they are around children, and find ways to make the children feel comfortable around them.
Not saying thats the case, but in this day and age, I would not encourage my children, or anyone elses to feel "off-guard" around someone that has seemed to go out of their way to resemble a known "safe adult figure" (Santa).
Whats the first thing that is said when a pedophile is arrested? "why he/she is such a nice person, they even offerred to babysit/coach a sports team/tutor etc. etc,"
Sad but true, these are the times we live in.

The situation with "Santa" was not that he looked like Santa, but that he was telling kids he WAS Santa when they asked. This was at Epcot during the holiday celebration, and Santa was already in the park. He was asked to stop and his answer was that he could tell them he was Santa if it made them happy and Disney couldn't do anything about it. Disney disagreed and did something about it, so kids wouldn't be confused by two different Santas.

Hmmm, touchy situation! I can understand not wanting to disappoint a kid if they asked, but I can see the issues involved in having someone appear as a "character" in a theme park, and that random person *could* have bad motives....I saw a man at Disneyland also who 'looked' like Santa, no costume, and he was staring intently at all the little kids running by-kind of gave me an uneasy feeling....

I get a little curious when people go out of their way to cause confusion like that.I've known several "Santas" who really get into their role and, like CMs, they love the magic they can make in kids' lives. These guys still have to shop, eat out, etc., and of course even in "civilian" clothing they look like the Big Guy, so in a way they stay in character all the time. When they are inevitably asked if they are the real Santa, they don't like to spoil the magic or a child's belief, just like when a kid asks if the Mouse is the real Mickey.
That being said, I can understand that even (hopefully) innocent play-acting would cause problems in a Disney park. It's not right that the one guy kept insisting he was the real Santa. (Unless, of course, he was the real Santa -- did anyone think to check his i.d.??? :)) If you want to actively play the part, go where you've been invited and won't cause confusion.
BTW, the funniest "Santa" situation I ever dealt with involved off-duty Santas. My family and I were eating out at a pizza buffet a couple of years ago, and seated at a table near by was a guy who was obviously a department store Santa (or possibly the real one -- he really looked the part!). Big white beard, white hair. No fur-lined coat or hat, but he was wearing a red shirt.
He was finishing his meal as we were starting ours, and of course he was drawing a lot of stares. He acted like he was pretty used to it. When he was done, he waved at the boys and the other kids there (nothing creepy) as he left the restaurant.
Less than a minute later, another department store Santa walked in and got in line for the buffet. You should have seen all the kids' eyes bug out then!!!

Can you name the three "princesses" who took part in the ceremonial opening of the original Fantasyland on 17 July 1955?
And no, Alice isn't one of them.
Are you sure of that? I just checked the video and at the opening ceremony there was a tableau with four characters. One made an obvious yawn so I expect that to be Sleeping Beauty (Princess Aurora). One was obviously dressed as Snow White. One was obviously Peter Pan (but HE wouldn't appreciate being classed as a princess). The fourth had the hair style of Alice and so I thought it was her. But the teaser prior to the break before the opening ceremony mentioned Snow White, Cinderella and Peter Pan by name. One last possible person was dressed as a princess and danced around waving a wand so I am suspecting this is supposed to be Cinderella's Fairy Godmother.
So, even tho I think that Alice was one of the characters represented, but using your clue that Alice was not included in your accounting, I will say Snow White, Cinderella and Princess Aurora (aka Sleeping Beauty). But I will put in for an honorable mention to Someone who looks like Alice, White Rabbit, Peter Pan and Capt Hook. I will also mention there was a very short shot of someone who may have been Wendy.

Can you name the three "princesses" who took part in the ceremonial opening of the original Fantasyland on 17 July 1955?
And no, Alice isn't one of them.
i see alice, sleeping beauty, peter pan, snow white, and the fairy godmother. I give up. mom is screaming for breakfast.

Doh. I guess I know how Enchanted ends now LOL. That's what I get for not seeing it by this point!
Shorty when I was a kid Alice was my favorite- they were selling Alice dresses back in the mid-70's when they also only had like minnie and Snow dresses- and since I didn't want to be Minnie and didn't look like Snow- I wore my Alice dress a lot in the park. I looked a lot like her, too.
Who cares if she's a princess? Jack Sparrow isn't a prince but you sure see a lot of kids dressed up like him. Doesn't the spirit of the P&P Party entitle one to have a little creative license and dress up as their favorite character even if not technically a princess?
There are people who say Mulan isn't either. But then, she only saved China-so I guess that's not as hard as singing at the wishing well or scrubbing a floor and she doesn't qualify ? LOL

:o: I'm sorry February!!! I didn't mean to help ruin the ending for you! Forgive me?? :p:
I have to agree with you about Mulan...she was one tough chick! She is honestly one of my favorites becuase of the fact that she was tough, she took control and she showed those men that she was just as good as they were. Who cares that she couldn't talk to birds, she had Eddie Murphy at her side. :D:

And how many other princesses are qualified with fireworks, and weaponry. The others stand around for their prince to come save them, but Mulan went right out there and kicked ..... well it is Disney, so she just blew the bad guys up. :D:

Well she's my hero that's for sure! :) Mulan totally rocks.
And on the subject of fair merchandising of Fairys can I just say that I think it stinks there is no Blue Fairy merch to be had at WDW while Tink is everywhere? No offense to Tink but how about some love for Blue eh? believe me, I looked (and asked) for everywhere for her! She's only a major factor in the whole Wishes display, but whatever. We fairies can't get no respect.
(and don't worry Chip- I figured Giselle probably didn't end up with anyone besides Dempsey anyway! LOL I really have to get that movie!)

I would think she would look more like the fairy from "fractured fairy tales" the one that gets smashed by the logo!
:hysteria:
They refer to her as a princess here in the snyop:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0461770/
Of course, they could be referring to the generic idea that ALL women believe that they are princesses (in training)
hehehe
I know I am a Princess! It's in my screen name! That's how you know;)...ala' Enchanted. LOVED the movie! One of my Disney faves now and forevermore!

Me too. My Disney movie collection is HUGE because of the kids...oops, no wife, GF or kids.
...For the grandkids....err, same problem.
...For the neices and nephew...well I have those but they don't watch videos much and due to an overly religious mother (my beloved sister) who still is being influenced by the claims from the Southern Baptist group of years ago, is basicly anti-Disney, they don't do Disney much (and are getting "too old" for Disney movies anyway. Hopefully this is just a short phase.).
...For all the child visitors I get...nope, I rarely get visitors to my home of any age.
OK, I'll admit it... They are for ME. OK?

Hey don't apologize, we have all the Disney stuff on VHS! and have been converting to DVD when they come out. (and NOW that are changing to BluRay!!! dang!)
I also have a small but growing collection of "B" SCi-Fi movies (Think Sci-Fi Drive in theatre!!) the good thing is sometimes they come two or three to a DVD!

I figured if anyone would understand it would be people as "pixiedusted" as I am. :D:
Actually I am not ashamed of my Disney obsession. I shout it loud and clear. I'm well known around home and work as "the Disney guy". :D:
BTW I also loudly proclaim my assocoation with SGT. Since I was a teen I have worn a cap anytime I am not in bed (or the shower). My current hat of choice is one with a nice large SGT logo on the front. :D: (The hat is because I am too lazy to comb my hair as often as it needs it. :) )

Yeah, Mulan is a hero rather than a Princess. In fact, I say it's better than princesses. Heroes -they look out and do what is best to keep those they love safe, cared for, and happy. Usually involves a selfless decision too. Lots of them gave up things for themselves for a cause they know is right. Herc gave up become Immortal. Simba gave up a life of "Hakuna Matata" leisure to reclaim his role. Mulan put her life in peril for her country and her family. Even look at Kenai from Brother Bear, he had the choice to be human but instead he decided to remain a bear companion to Koda, to make up for the grief he caused him as a human in killing the kid's mom.
Princesses - Cindy uh ... well, she was nice to everyone. Even if they walked all over her. Snow White um, she did some great house work! Aurora - hey, I bet she sleeps soundly though the night and does not steal the covers. Jasmine, ok I gotta give her credit for some things cause she dared to speak back against planned/arranged marriages. (Good thing she was a Princess cause elsewhere in a Muslim country like her's in that time period, she'd most likely won't be alive to see the next week!) Belle I do give credit for as well. She took care of an elderly father and took his place as a prisoner.
Princesses are cool. I like them, but I'm not so much on fantasizing and wanting their life styles. Personally, my favorite Princess is Princess Diana. I loved the things she had done to help others. But then again, she isn't Disney.

This is why these two are my favorites, because they actually did something about their own plight. Don't forget also, in the third one (ok, second one was terrible, but the third one was pretty good) Jasmine punched one of the thieves for ruining her wedding. How many princesses would do that?

Well, Aurora and Snow are obvious. There's one other one who I'm sure is the third princess, but I'm not sure who she is for sure. My first thought was Cinderella, but with you having quotes around the word princess I think my first thought is wrong and I'm going to say she's the Blue Fairy.

We bought Enchanted the day it came out and it was right before our trip to DL, so we did not have time to watch it. When we got to my parents (who by the way just celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary on 4/24 and they are STILL TOGETHER!!!!! They ROCK!) house, I told my mom she needed to buy it. My mom is a Disney fan like we are! That is where I get it from! My dad does not care too much for DL..:( Too many strollers hit the back of his ankles everytime we went back in the last century, the 1960's. It sounds like SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO....long ago when you say *last century*!
Anyway, she bought it and we watched it, while poor Ralphie was in the Bay Area and my folks both loved it. My pop was a little nervous when it started out as animated, but got into it when it went to real life characters. My mom was cracking up the whole way through. She loved Pip! Who doesn't?
It was great to watch it with them. Especially my mom who loves Disney like I do. I want to take them with us on a Disney trip sometime, but I am afraid my pop would just stay at the hotel and take long naps. He is 85 yrs old. My mom is 86 and still can go, but has a lot of joint problems and back issues. Hey, she's 86 and suffered through back surgery in the 1940's in the Coast Guard!
Ralphie's parents came from Europe and did not let their kids watch too much *American TV*. He did not see the Disney movies, rather his mom read him the original fairytales and would not allow the Disney movie in her house! So I am slowly, but surely (don't call me Shirley!) watching all the Disney films with him. He also never got to see The Wizard of Oz and many other American pop culture shows and films. He has been watching TV Land and many movies now and has a better idea of what Disney is all about. He just knows in his heart he loves it for the magic and fantasy and being young again (but in a different way this time...).
His parents took them there when they were young. They stayed off site in a motel with a kitchen, so his mom could cook all their meals and not let the kids eat *junk* food at the park. They packed a lunch and ate it at the Picnic area outside the park. So now he goes hogwild on our trips now that we are the *grownup* kids and can afford to do it our way! We have a great time staying at the DL Hotel, where neither of us got to, cause $$ was tight in the 1960's for both our family's and we have to eat at Blue Bayou and have the Monte Cristo, AKA *Heart attack on a plate.* We do it our way now and love it!
But I have to thank my folks for taking me and my siblings when were young and NOT making us eat a picnic outside and giving us our ticket books and the little $$ they could afford for snacks or souvenirs, and letting my brother and me run off by ourselves for the whole day to ride the Skyway and ATIS all day long, over and over...My brother and I were best pals back then and had a great time together at DL! You never forget those times.:)
I really have to thank them for letting us watch every Disney film when they came out and watching *The Wonderful of Color* every Sunday night as a family. I have to thank my mom for instilling her love of fantasy and magic in me and passing along her love of Disney films and Disneyland on to me. I found a lifelong addiction to everything Disney through them...:dancear: :walt:
My favorite Princess is Belle. :belleg: She is smart, loves to read and is pretty brave as well. She is not a blond either!;) She has brown hair, quite ordinary for a Princess. I collect Beauty and the Beast and Belle pins and collectibles. I have a HUGE collection.
Got a BIG LOVE for Disney!!!!!:D:

And no, Alice isn't one of them.Okay, looks like there's a lot of confusion out there between "being on the telecast" and "being the official greeting princesses". There were only three of the latter.
In case anyone wants to watch the film again and see if they can guess, I've hidden the answer below, highlight it to read:
The three "princesses" were Snow White, Tinker Bell, and...
... wait for it ...
... Peter Pan!

Ah, Peter Pan.
Well, he could be a princess since the Queen of Hearts is played by a princess too. He is soooo snarky. I love him!
You read that right.
Anyhow, I wish my Disney collection was bigger. Kudos to you Randy B for being able to proclaim your happiness and have fun!
As long as you're not one of those stalkers, (we know who they are) I'm glad you're keeping the Disney magic alive.

Actually I believe Aladdin is set several hundred years before the time of Mohammed. If nothing else the women's fashions would give that away.
On the otherhand, Genie keeps coming up with 20th century pop culture references and in the stage show Al shows Jamine the scenic highlights of the modern world, so one can't be too certain.

Considering that the guy was gonna chop her hand off for "stealing" that apple for the child, I would think that a worse punishment may be due for a woman who denied a proper arranged marriage.
I was not really focusing on time period, but more cultural practices. Certain practices (such as the wearing of a burka in some areas of the Mid East) still show that women are still under the "ownership" so to speak of men. So if a women is still forced into full body coverings today, goodness knows what they were thought of in the time period of the film.
But if one wants to get into the actual time - we know very well that it was about when the Sphinx was in the process of being created. If any Historians (or someone of the Islamic faith would be better) can elaborate on that time period, then that may give a good idea as to when the the story (at least in the film) occurred. Sultan also references to Allah when addressing Rajah. From all I know, that is what the people of Islamic faith call their creator. Weather it be in any reference to the Muslim faith, I do not know. All I know is that Muhammad is one of Allah's prophets.

I'm not Muslim, but I do possess a couple of Wall Charts of History--one secular, one Biblical. According to the secular one, the Sphinx was built along with the Great Pyramid of Cheops, between 2350 and 2330 B.C.. As for Mohammed, it says he started preaching in 613 A.D., was forced to flee from Mecca in 622, dictated the Quran/Koran in 625, retook Mecca in 630, defeated nomads in 631, then unified the tribes at war with each other, with his successors, or caliphs, ruling over them. So, there's a gap of nearly 3000 years between the Sphinx and the founding of Islam.
That's your history lesson for today.

To add to the history lesson, Islamic law is not the only law to proscribe that punishment for stealing. There was the Code of Hammurabi (circa 1760 BC)
(from Ancient Mesopotamia, City of Babylon, in what is present day Iraq..)
Just thought I'd throw that in there..
