Many experts believe that Steamboat Willie - aka Mickey Mouse - comes out of the racially demeaning minstrel tradition.
There are some Pennsylvanians who think they know of a guy who, in the 1920s, built a wooden toy mouse and named him Micky. They also believe that their guy and Disney could have crossed paths. The mystery is explored in "Broken Toy: A Man's Dream, A Company's Mystery'' by Craig Andrews.

Mickey's celebrity appeal: The official savior of the Mickey copyright for an additional 20 years was Sonny Bono, who in 1998 authored the Sonny Bono Copyright Extension Act.
His geopolitical significance: North Korean President Kim Jong-il is said to idolize Michael Jordan. His son, Kim Jong-nam, is fascinated by the Mouse, prompting someone to call Mickey "a weapon of mass distraction."
His ubiquity: The password for the Allied forces on D-Day was "Mickey Mouse."
His shadow: Canadians, when trying to find their nation's equivalent to Mickey, settled on, well, Anne of Green Gables. Enough said.

His Stature: Ask most children how tall Mickey is and they answer: As big as a grown-up. Thats because he is most likely encountered by them in a Disney theme park rather than in cartoons or in movies or on The Mickey Mouse Club.
His mystery: In all Mickey Mouse cartoons, Mickey's ears face forward no matter which way he's facing.
His style: His red pants are velvet. Disney reports that he's had 175 costume changes, at last count.
His midlife crisis: In the early 1990s, more kids recognized Super Mario than Mickey Mouse. Not so today. Aggressive strategy and a general loosening of the rules on how Mickey could be merchandized have made the most of the Mouse, and now no one doesn't know him.
:m Happy Birthday you silly little mouse. :m
