I just returned from a wonderful trip to WDW. My husband and I were there for our honeymoon( we both work for a Renaissance Faire so we love going to Disney because we can empathize with the CMs we do the same guest interaction and so appreciate the hard work you guys do.) As it was our 3 trip together in as many years we decided that we were going to take it slow and just enjoy ourselves. If we did something alright if not no big deal for example we missed that bus, ride, whatever we will get the next one. We could not get over all the little things that CMs did for us. Nothing big but cute things like the CM on the TTA put a just married signed on our car. We stayed at the POFQ again and the CM managed to get us the same room we had 2 years ago for our first trip and we had an awesome housekeeper named Rosa for the last 2 years who just made our stay fantastic.
What did upset me however was a very rude SG over at MGM (we saw a bunched but this one really upset me). We were there on Tuesday Nov 6th in the early afternoon so we decided to ride the great movie ride. The line was quite reasonable but cue the SGs who had to complain the whole time. Then they ended up in the same car as us behind us. It Mom, Dad and 3 wonderful teens actually I think one was a pre-teen. Here where the problem started our host was a nice CM member I think he name was Everret I couldn’t see his name tag. He had a very slight lisp when he talked and most likely it is not noticeable normally but the microphone he had made it sound worse.
Now he spoke quite clearly and I and my other half enjoyed his enthusiasm. The pre-teen behind us spent the whole ride making snarky comments about our host. When we got the part where the host switches out we got the gangsta host the girl still would not stop with the comment like how stupid the ride was etc … At this point much to my new husband’s dismay I turned and shot her a glare. She stopped for a little bit. Unfortunately, when it got to the part where the hosts switch back this idiot girl actually had the nerve to BOO the host and stated she wanted the other guy back because “He is not a dork and at least he knows how to talk right.” This was not under her breath but loud and clear. I whipped around stared at her and comment on how could someone so young be so rude and cynical. She turned beat red but still did not completely stop with her comments.
After the ride we saw the host leave the area and by chance saw him go into Star Tours and through a back door as we headed for that ride. I hope that SG didn’t ruin his day. I don’t know if that was a planned break or if he needed to get off stage after her comments. I wanted to tell that he did a great job and that some of us really enjoyed his performance but he walked too fast for us to catch up with him. I hate people who tried to wreck something just cause that don’t have any imagination left. I see too much of that working the faire with adults trying to make me break character because they could not get into the spirits of things.
Sorry this went on so long I just wanted to say that some of us really appreciate all the stuff CMs do and it hurts when I see a SG wreck a good performance.

I definitely would have said something to the *child* as well. How absolutely rude and the parents did nothing??? Poor CM:( I guess you can tell where she learned it. Oh, sometimes I just want to crawl in a hole and pretend the rest of the world does not exist. As Charles Schultz so succintly put it, "I love humanity, it's people I can't stand."

I doubt I should tell this one......
I was working the tram system at a platform, assisting guests exiting the tram , doing the safety check, then signaling the tram to continue. It was late in the evening and cold with a strong wind. The guests were mostly in a good mood, pleasant and friendly. The transportation staff is one of the nicest groups of people I know.
A tram arrived and the announcer was a girl with a slight speech difficulty. A teen female passenger was loudly mocking the announcer's speech from her seat in the middle row of the tram for all to hear.
I assisted the guests and gave the driver a "wait" signal. I went over to the row with the rude girl and her friends and had the following conversation (not too quietly):.
Me: Did you all have a great day today?
She: Yes (excitedly) Yes!!!!
Me: Was the park beautiful?
She: Yes (excitedly) Yes!!!!
Me: Then why do you find it necessary to act so ugly toward someone right now?
She: Stunned silence, her friends laugh at her, some other guests verbally support what I said.
I stepped back and gave the driver an enthusiastic "Proceed" signal and thats the last I saw of them.
I later told this story to the director of the department (not the lead, location supervisor, supervisor or manager) and his reply was "You should have slapped the b---- too".

I also have a slight lisp, you can really hear it when I am tired. I had so many speech lessons when I was young, did no good. Now I kinda chuckle about it. Imagine having a name like susi slicker and NOT being able to pronounce your S'es very well...;)

Thank you, Mikey, for speaking up. So many SGs badmouth other people to make themselves feel more important, but they don't realize how STOOPID they make themselves look, and sometimes it needs to be pointed out.
We need more people like you.

About twice a month, I do my schtick and have some kid that pipes up after my first laugh telling me how I am not scary or funny. Sometimes, they will break the anonymity and do it as they are leaving the bus. I, smiling, thank them for their opinion, and tell them I will take their opinion under the same advisement which I take the opinions of those who enjoyed the show I try to give. Then, I take a look at their parents who are often smiling at what their kids have said and tell them to please enjoy the rest of their bus rides with the automated system. I'll apologize that they didn't enjoy my show, and at least they won't have to put up with me again. All with a smile. They often don't know how to respond to that.
I would love to know what the parents think of what their kids said after a week on the buses.

Ha! Way to go, BW. It's amazing what you can tell people, with a smile on your face, when you'd really rather be sticking your tongue out at them. :p:
They get so confused they don't know what to think - it takes awhile to process that kind of subtle comment.

Hey, if you think of me that way, that's fine. I don't mind having one person annoyed by my show, because that's one of the 80 that I had on board, and the rest clapped and cheered. I have to look at the numbers and how many people enjoyed the show. The ones who didn't were welcome to leave at any time during the trip. Just head out the roof hatch, onto the smoking section of the bus. I stated as we were leaving, in no uncertain terms, what would happen: We would be showing Gone With the Wind.
...Nice girls, a little slutty looking but nice. LOLSounds good to me :p:. Wait, you said they were 17. Never mind.

Just guessing from the context it is probably a text messaging term for "putting them in their place" or using peer pressure to slap down an errant person or group.
Of course, since I am now offically an "old fart" and I am one of those annoying people who still belive that a phone is a device for talking to people at a distance just long enough to make arrangements to meet face to face so a conversation can be held, I don't have any clue to how to even read text messages in clear english, much less the highly obscured and abbreviated stuff that is common on phones. ;)

I think I must be one of the few people in the world to actually use full words and complete sentences (with punctuation) in my text messages... Or at least full sentence fragments. :) I can type out pretty quickly on my phone using the T9 way of typing, and it's just easier.

But neither of you are a teen girl who counts any moment not spent dicussing their classmates as wasted time. It is much more important to point out a classmate who's shoes clash with the color of their locker door and how such behavior MUST not be allowed. In those cases the ability to send messages at lightning speed is MUCH more important than silly stuff like spelling and punctuation. ;)
The stuff that confued me (before I simply stopped accepting text messages) was the texts sent to me by my cell provider that (I think) were supposed to be advertizements to get me to buy additional features. But they were so heavily abbreviated I never could figure out what they were talking about. Now the occasional text I get is erased without even an attempt to open it.
I am even so silly that if I want to take a photo I use a crazy device called a camera!

Texting is not allowed in my house or on my kid's phones.
When they are paying the bill, they can do what you want. When I am paying the bill, you do what I say or lose the privilege.
In fact, if I see you texting on my bus (only during my spiel, why would you want to do anything else while I'm talking anyway) I say " Folks, in addition to no eating, drinking or smoking, there is also no texting"

When I got cell phones for DW and I, I had to get simple phones, as no phone/camera combo's are allowed in places that I work or sometimes visit. And DW and I think that if it's importatnt enough, she can call me and leave a message.
Of course, that is always my questions, WHAT are all these people talking about? (OR texting?)
I am a part time professor, and a number of years ago, read about a study that a graduate student did for his PHD. The study was about interpersonal communications, and how verbal and personal contact skills are on the decline. The gist of his thesis was tht too many people were relying on E-mails and texting to communicate, and did not know how to deal effectively with an interview or face to face conversation.

As a Cast Member with a speech difficulty himself (I speak really fast and have this tendancy to stutter), I've gotta thank you. Our speech just ended up this way, we didn't do anything to encourage it, and we shouldn't be made fun just because we have to pause every few seconds to make sure we're being understood. If you haven't already done so, you should send a letter to WDW Guest Relations complimenting this guy, I'm sure ill still make his day :D:.
As to this whole texting debate, I honestly am neutral. I'm young, so texting's a natural thing for me. At the same time though, I really don't tend to do it that much (heck, most of my messages are to myself so I remember which locker I put my stuff in).

All I can say to that is...Bull! Texting while others are talking or expecting your attention is rude under any condition. Deaf or otherwise. There is nothing that can be sent now that can't be sent later.
The same applies to just general cell phone use when in the company of friends or others. If I go someplace with anyone and they get on the cell phone and don't get off, I get up and leave. They obviously didn't want my company and I am tired of watching them pretentiously go on and on.
Cell phones can be a great thing when used appropriately. They have saved many lives and prevented many problems. If, however, they are used in place of face to face communication, nothing good can come out of that.

:mad:Agreed, and bravo, with one exception -- the one mentioned by BionicEar. If the "when others are talking or expecting your attention" is a general announcement over a loudspeaker system, a hard-of-hearing person may not even realize there is someone speaking. I have no problem with someone sitting on a bus or elsewhere by themselves typing into their cell phone. But in a face-to-face situation or when a group is interacting, having a separate conversation (written or spoken) with someone not there is rude to the people you are with.
Caller i.d. is a wonderful thing. If a call or message comes and it's urgent, first excuse yourself from the people you are with and then take the call, or take it long enough to say, "I can't talk right now. Can I call you back?" Otherwise, it can wait.

First of all, If a guest is deaf, they won't hear me say no texting. Second, if they are just hard of hreaing, they probably won't understand what I said on the crappy bus PA system. Third, If you can't tell that I'm joking with my guests, you have a problem.
I say things on my bus to interact with my guests as well as to inform them. I'm looking to enhance their experience. I try very hard to be humorous and make a memorable experience. If that means I'm poking fun at someone, so be it.
So far in my career at WDW, I have only had an issue with what I have said on my bus with 1 person. I have transported thousands.

What provisions , in an emergency, does WDW, have for those guests? I know that the attractions have some sort of device that gives them SOME of the attraction spiel in word form!

There's lots of things Disney does in hotel rooms, from alarm flashers and bed-shakers to TTY devices, but there's no good way to put a non-audio emergency communication system is an attraction that I know of.

Oh. I was thinking with all the cell phone/pager technology there would be a way of having a "vibrate" type of display pager for communication.
Many years ago, I helped repair and do maintence on teletypes for deaf students at a college I was attending. (military training on teletypes) plus helped install the "flashing" doorbells.

The MiMs has canned messages that we can use in an emergency. Those would be up on the reader board. The only problem with that is, In an emergency, I don't have time to manually queue a message for the reader board and I can't queue a message while in motion over 5mph.
Those who are hearing impared will just need to cue on the visual signals given, like the bus is filling with smoke and the guests are flocking to the doors. Maybe I need to exit too!
Now if this condition really existed on my bus and I see a guest not taking action, I'm going to them and assisting in the evacuation. That's my FD training going into action.
