View Full Version : The Brazilians are like cows...

...you just have to know how to herd 'em. Usually I stay far, far away from the parks in July, but I had an insane urge to go to AK this morning. The Brazilian tour groups were out in full force! This was my first time dealing with them in any mass quantity, but I discovered that although they are pushy, they respond like cattle if you just push back.
First experience was heading one way while half the nation of Brazil was headed in the opposite direction. I was on the edge of the walkway with nowhere to go. I simply aimed the pointy end of my water bottle out in front of me...I don't know how many licks it takes to get to the center of a Tootsie pop, but I know that it takes five Brazilians to walk smack dab into the bottle and get poked before the rest get out of the way.
If they are heading in your direction too slowly, simply dodge, weave and elbow. They respond to aggressive body language by making way.
My favorite was the group of a couple dozen who decided to all literally sit down on the floor of the store at the end of Everest. I was going to play some Twister (Orange shirt! Brown hand! Stomp!), but a CM came and started chasing them away.
It was rather amusing in a way, and other than some chanting and the floor sitting, I didn't witness anything to shockingly rude. The main annoyance was their sheer numbers.

Through talking with guests here for the same purpose, I have come to the conclusion that the Brazilian tour groups are here for a soccer tournament, or so it seems. I was talking to one group about their soccer match today, and they said they had beat one of the Brazilian teams. Can anyone verify or dispel this notion?

I have never been to the Parks when the Brazilians were there, so have never experienced their presence. I hear many stories of insanity about when they are there and that they are very rude, cutting line etc. Hope to never have the *pleasure* of their company...

And not just the parks. I went to the Millenia Mall on Friday afternoon and they had pretty much taken over.

The couple groups I saw in June/July were surprisingly well behaved, altho I don't know why that did surprise me?? Guess its from all the horror stories I've read. It was funny tho when you would suddenly see a bunch walk in at some counter service lunch place...you would RUN to the nearest cashier to order ANYTHING....just to avoid getting caught behind what feels like 1/2 a country worth of people.

The other half of the nation of Brazil were at Blizzard Beach today. I have never seen so many, many more then in previous years it seems. And who ever told the fat cow to sit in the white baby tubes in the creek? All while wearing two peice swimsuits. GRRRRRRRRR

We ran into a small group of them last August, teenaged girls on a school trip so it must have been after school had re-started. We were at AK, they were fairly pleasant, a bit pushy but I'm kinda intimadating, we were getting ice creams at one of the carts near EE, I guess they could tell not to get between me an my Mickey Premium. We ran into a lot of Brits also, they were always very pleasant. I guess you all see some funny things different times of year, so far I have seen;
Pleasant Brits
Loud Jerseyites
Aussies beating their kids
The people I found most pushy were the East Indians, one morning waiting for the bus at AS Music there was a group of about 10 behind me in line when a bus for another park arrived. They all ran for the bus like if we get there first we get to get on. About half boarded before they realized it was the wrong bus, maybe two minutes, the line behind me had filled the gap at that point. They came back and just started getting back in line anywhere they wanted including right in front of me, I made it clear they would not board ahead of me. There were two of the group that went right up to the front of the line and stood off to the side like they planned on jumping on the bus as soon as it arrived, Myself and several other people made it clear that wasnt going to happen either. I dont think they ended up making that bus at all. It was pretty entertaining since we had to wait a bit.

AHH! They make life at merge so much harder. I found that there are never less than 10, no matter how many the group leader claims there are. Luckily I know what's going on ;)
CM at merge: *about to close standby* How many?
Stupid Brazillian Tour Leader: Four.
CM: You'll be in the next group, it will be just a few minutes.
*CM lets in FP, cuts off the line, procedes back to standby, lets them in*
Turns out that what Brazil considers "four" is American 50. What was more painful was some of them weren't wearing the colored shirts. The leader looked like he was trying to play merge and since not all of them had the group color shirt, I was worried that he was preventing regular guests from getting in. I made sure he only let those in the group in and he assured me that they were all in the group. Screwed up the entire FP:SB ratio
Scarriest moment dealing with the Brazillians? When they started a parkwide chant at Epcot after ROE. With megaphones.

But earlier this year I had a good incident with them.
I was at Epcot with my nephew Dainan (Cyclone Man) at we were near Norway about 8:20pm, going to wait for IllumiNations near Mexico and the place was sort of deserted, so we decided to ride Maelstrom first and then come back. When we came back the entire fence area was full of Brazilians.
I was on my ECV and pulled up behind them and just sat. After a few minutes a couple of them moved away and gave me room to pull my ECV right up to the fence, and Dainan stood behind me so we both had an unobstructed view.
And neither of us asked any of them to let me in!

Brazilians may be a pain in the neck but what is the cause of their actions.
Most of them are teen agers and young adults. Cheerleaders are a prime example of what happens when teen run amok. In this case this is the prime problem with the Brazilians. They are rambuctious youths miles from parents and authorities like principals. They are like boxed foals turned loose in a pasture.
Second problem is mob mentality and poor leadership. They follow the group leader who to often is overwhelmed with too many people or is not trained to be an assertive leader. They should tell people before riding to how to load. They should be translating and making sure the group is behaved. I had a large family plow through the DL Jungle Cruise line. They were catching up to family even on the stairs. Nothing new with groups cutting in line, hogging resources and not obeying CMs.
At DL you see the Japanese and Koreans in a group and they have a strong leader who tells people what to do. We been lucky to avoid the Brazilians but please do look around for other groups of unruly teens with poor supervison and you will realize that Brazilians are not the only ones.
Also if you talk to them in a humane way you will probably get a lot accomplished.

Churchy, I sincerely disagree.
For most of these kids from Brazil, it's a chance to be away from their parents, their strict upbringing, and school. Most of them are 15, and this is their gift from their parents. Think quinceanos, mostly a coming out party in the hispanic culture.
The leaders are assertive, they want their kids to do whatever they want to do.
This is not right. Ever. It's also a very different culture that folks are dealing with here. In Brazil, you're either rich or poor. There is no middle class. These kids are used to servants, and can be extremely rude.
On the other hand, you will find the rare exception of a good kid in an unruly group. Those are the ones I will be kind to, as an example of how to act in the real world to their fellow members of the group. It tends to work.

it reminds me of the book "work and play at the rat"... where the author(s) make a brilliant (sarc) deduction that CMs have made up their own lingo when it came to rude guests... the authors declare that since the CMs can talk about guests as being rude (?) that they call all rude guests Brazilians.... because to the authors there is no way that one ethnic group could be the source of so many negative cast stories. They then say that most cast members live in their own reality and this is an example of it because they refuse to ruin the magic for themselves therefore all rude guests = brazillians... lol................. Nope... there are just that many bad groups of brazillians!

...all three authors are hacks that have no idea what goes on at WDW....In quoting you, I removed your "IMO" because to me it's not just your opinion. I've read quite a few articles about what an awful place Disney World is, woe to anyone who ever goes there and gets brainwashed by the mouse, blah blah blah blah.
I went to Amazon and looked it up. After reading that, I would love to have these authors on my bus. I am sure I would be one of the "mindless, unquestioning Disney fanatic robots" that they think work here. Sounds like they basically want to make even all the Cast members sound like these horrible people... In the (in-house) review, I especially like:
...the appalling, even stomach-turning, working conditions endured by the "head-wearers," which'll make you pause before posing for a grip-and-grin with Mickey.
Hey lookie, a review that I agree with:
If you prefer the Marxist view of the world and think Disney is the symbol of capitalistic evil, this book is for you!
On the other hand, if you're looking for solid research and thoughtful reflection, find another book. The authors gather together anecdotal evidence in a biased fashion and then draw grand conclusions. The approach is roughly: Think Disney exploits its workers? Look for a few disgruntled workers to back up your claim. Find one who doesn't complain? Call 'em naive and move on...
When they started reciting known urban legends as truths, I knew the book was a joke.

Mr. Syndrome is NUTS. He went to MGM this evening while I wisely stayed home, and he actually ENJOYED viewing Fantasmic with the Brazilian tour groups! The chanting didn't phase him a bit, and he loved the fact that they were yelling and cheering Mickey on throughout the show...he said they were the most enthusiastic and fun people he has ever watched it with. (I didn't go with him to MGM because I knew better). I guess it's all in the eye of the beholder...
He did experience the annoyance of their path-blocking though, but he spent enough years working in downtown Chicago to know how to be an aggressive walker. He said he felt like the Pied Piper because he would break through the Brazilian roadblock and a bunch of other people would follow behind him.

yeah, we arrived at MK and saw the hordes of orange shirts getting off a bus, so we got on the monorail to Epcot.... their orange shirts stretched for the whole length of the charter bus parking lot!!!! when we got back over to MK later there was not a trace of them... maybe they were all at MGM tonight! lol

A few weeks ago the wife and I were at Rockin Roller Coaster. A massive group tried to push through and we and a few other folks corraled them as you would cattle by making a human wall that led them into a corner.
Once in line a fat one busted through us and expecting more the wife and I linked arms to block the ones behind us. The one that got through, we yelled in tandem "NO....BACK!" She looked stunned and reached her arm betwixt us and tried to pull her friends through. We slapped her hand down and yelled "BACK!" She still stared in dumb silence so I pulled her back by her shirt and stuck her behind us.

I wish I'd known about the Brazilians last July, because we never would have visited WDW then. (We SOOOO prefer to take a chance in hurricane season!) We had 1/2 the nation of Brazil fast pass Aerosmith coaster on us. We lost count at 125 people following the flag up the fast pass line ahead of us!! Quite a scary site & a LONG wait, esp. since the wait clock didn't reflect the fact that ALL those FP guests would be going through at once.... I was kinda wondering that too. At some point one of them will be getting a different time then the others. I really think that there needs to be a limit on how many ppl can be in one group at a time. Kinda like the malls do with limiting how many ppl can walk around at once. Mostly a teen thing but I have seen it enforced at malls for large groups of adults too. At the least have some sort of thing where they have to have X amount of adults per X amount of kids.
I have not seen them in person yet but have seen videos of how inconsiderate they can be while there is a show going on. That is something that needs to be addressed. Since I will be getting an AP and plan on experiencing the parks in the summer, I now know to avoid July. I know one thing, try the sit down and block the walkway thing with me and there will be quite a few fingers stepped on and legs run over with the stroller. OOPs! I'am sorry did I just walk on your head. What a shame.

I TOTALLY agree! I've heard stories even that they have found the override button on the FP machines. The worst is when they visit Philhar with FPs. They hand them out to each person of their 90 person mob, then are given back one by one to the merge CM-- very annoying to do while watching your standby line, assisting guests in wheelchairs, and watching your count. If I'm Return, I tell them to just keep the stack together and have the first person give it to them. Merge can count them while watching the other line, and when the last few neon shirts go through you'll be able to check your counts against the amount of FPs in your hand! :D:
There really should be a rule about how many people can travel in one group. I've seen a group from a community church that had close to 400 people in it. Probably one of the scariest moments of my life :p:

How could you enjoy yourself with that many ppl in a group. There is no way everyone agrees about which attractions to see and such. I would feel like cattle being herded ...MOOOOO! Or mindless drones. PLus I couldnt handle being around the same ppl all day like that.
I also think that having a limit on the amounts of groups would be a safety precaution too. If someone in the middle falls, would anyone else even notice ? And when they did notice the time frame to get word to the sole leader of the group could be time wasted getting help that was immediatley needed.

You need to learn some Portuguese phrases. Spanish is very close to Portuguese.
de nada = you are welcome
ola = hello
ciao = good bye as in the italian pronunciation
por favor = please
obrigado = thank you
repita = knucklehead could you repeat that
quantos = how many
Quantas pessoas = How many people
If you want to get fired then say "Filho da Puta" and it is fiyo or filyo with very little or no L sound.

LOL. Tour Groups were one of the most difficult things to handle this summer. I work at the land so the longest line we ever have is 20-30 minutes. If the group is huge we try to send them through our rarely-used fastpass line. Then guests get angry with us about it! "Oh what do I have to do to get special treatment like them?" I wanted to say so bad "Pretend like you don't speak english when you really do, chant and clap as often as possible, and be sure to wear plenty of spandex or revealing clothing." But I tried to reason with him (silly me, I know) by telling him that this was to save everyone the inconvenience of having to wait in line with these often unruly groups. We even had a group of four Brazilians jump out of one of the boats and walk out an emergency exit causing us to E-stop the ride. Then one of them "conveniently" fainted in front of the coordinator and they were let go with no consequences!!! I was FURIOUS!!! Then my friend who works over at the seas was trying to help them board clams and when she stepped in front of them to keep them from going on the belt one of the girls offs and PUNCHES her in the face! Needless to say the entire group was escorted from the park. THANK GOD JUSTICE WAS SERVED THAT TIME!

I say let the Brazilian tour groups stay on the old Discovery Island in Bay Lake (or is it in the Seven Seas Lagoon?). Have a ferry drop them off on the dock and then not come back until they have a chance to learn proper behavior.
All Disney would have to do to the island is repair the dock and a PA system that repeats things like "no chanting, no going on rides in groups of 1000" and so on in whatever language they speak.. The Brazilians can stay in the ruins of the island's buildings and live off the land. If that doesn't teach them proper behavior then nothing will.

There was planned a Pop Century pair of resorts around a body of water that would be twins.

I knew that there was some abandoned contruction sites at Pop but I didn't know the sites were so extensive. Seems like quite a waste to me. I know WDW can afford the waste but I still don't like it. I'm the type who'd rather empty, abandoned, and unused places be used for something. I don't like the empty SkyBucket stations in the MK, I don't like River Country abandoned and rotting away, and now the Pop sites are on that list too. I'm glad they finally did something with the old 20,000 Leagues Lagoon but IMO they could have come up with something better than a small playground, especially after 10 years of being unused. Do something with those places, just don't abandon them.
I'll have to check out the YouTube video sometime, this computer doesn't get along with YouTube. Actually, there's a few YouTube links scattered around this site I want to check out.
I dont want them over there. Do you realize how much that chanting is gonna carry over Hourglass lake? I like POP the way it is in the sections we choose. Nice and quiet. Make them all stay in the Carousel of Progress, maybe it will lull them into a stupor since it is a good place for a nap. LOL
I understand not wanting the Brazilians at Pop but the idea is to try to teach them to be civilized while also keeping them out of our way. I enjoy CoP and don't want it ruined by cramming it full of chanting, yelling Brazilians.
It's a great big beautiful tomorrow, shining at the end of every day!

While I think that this is a great suggestion,
I'm thinking that PITA will have a cow over this after all, there is wildlife on Discovery Island.
God knows that Disney will want to avoid conterversey.
It has always amused me that PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) is pronounced "pita" and that PITA stands for Pain In The Ass.

In all the Disney message boards I've visited, all the CMs insist that the Brazzies are the ABSOLUTE worst. There is NOBODY worse than them, period! A guest who was Brazilian blames his culture for it. He said that competitiveness in society is something they learn very early in life. The families that raise them must take a huge amount of the blame too. He added that Brazilian teens have been raised with the "You MUST beat this or that person" mentality. I wouldn't be surprised if it was true (I have no way to prove this except go to Brazil). Maybe that's why their society has such a massive economic gap. There is no middle class. You're either extremely rich (I don't know if $250,000 is considered a decent or gigantic amount of money in their country) or very poor. Sadly, some South American countries are like that. I have a friend from Ecuador who lives in a neighborhood surrounded by a brick wall to keep the "have nots" out! One side looks like Ethiopia (no offense intended to Ethiopians by the way) and the other side looks like Beverly Hills! Unbelievable.

There are several versions on why the legandary years were stopped and not completed.
The "Official" version is that after 9/11 the downswing in tourism killed the project as completed rooms were not filling, why complete more rooms. Now the buildings were too badly damaged by the hurricanes a couple of years ago to finish them and will need to be demolished and restarted. This option is too expensive so they sit, unfinished and empty.
Next version. They will be finished by 2010 as soon as they figure out whether to do them as family suites or low end DVC units. A lot of discussion has been going on about this.
Last version. Osceola County stopped construction. They were started without a building permit. The next time that Osceola County has a pet progect to fund, Disney will pony up a couple of million dollars to the project, Osceola County will issue a building permit and an occupancy permit and the site will be finished.
My guess is the truth is in a combination of the three versions.
River Country will never reopen. The FL law about the fresh water swimming ban due to that ameboa that lives on the bottom killed River Country.

That is the version I've always heard. The others wouldn't surprise me to much though.

I know that River Country will never reopen but the land is already developed and could be used for something. At least the nasty pools should be filled in, you know they must breed mosquitos like crazy.

They are executed on the spot.

Since we're on the subject of making the worst SG ever, here are a few ideas.
All their kids are half an inch too short for all the rides (they grow and shrink as needed), and they berate every Cast Member they meet. They have no clue when the 3:00 Parade is, nor do they actually care except to ask us repeatedly, in Portuguese.
And they eat, drink and smoke on the bus.
When they ride ToT, they throw stuff out the doors.
Oh, and they eat garlic on their way into the parks.
Top that.

When I saw the subject line I thought "best when herded into a small pen then cut into small pieces and roasted over a fire"

The whole group goes to the single rider line, then demands to ride in the same car (yes, all 150 of them in the SAME car...)
The males of the group grope the princesses and female face characters, and all of them try to pull off Mickey's head (but not Tigger's, they know he'll lay the smackdown).
They take old mugs/other resort mugs and use them at their resort.
They take flash pictures on dark rides, at shows and video with lighting when asked not to.
They abuse the free dining plan.
They change on the beach at the water parks.
and of course...
They use the bathroom in the bushes instead of just walking the 5' to the restroom.

I was on the "other side" two weeks ago. We did the transatlantic crossing on the magic and visited Loro Parque in Spain (think a cross between Sea World and Animal Kingdom, but without rides). We did the VIP tour that brought us to some backstage areas and gave us reserved seating for shows. As our guide trotted along at warp speed with her sign held aloft, I barreled through the crowd, knocking them out of my way while babbling to hubby in English...I'm probably now on some foreign version of SGT. I didn't feel too bad tho', as Europeans don't seem to have the concept of lines, personal space, or reserved seating like we do. You had to be physically assertive or you'd be trampled. The guides warned us to get to the shows early, even tho' our seats were roped off and marked with multiple signs. Sure enough, people would just push aside the signs and go through the ropes and then proceed to argue at length with the guides when told "no." A whole new world!
