I was on the receiving end of a non-Disney Stupid Guest Trick last night. My wife and I had traveled to the small east Texas town of Marshall to see their famed "Wonderland of Lights" and were taking a 1-hour bus tour. We had just been seated and I had my camera out, checking the settings for taking pics of the lights through the windows, when a lady behind me asks, "Are you going to be taking pictures of the lights through the window?" (No, ma'am, I was hoping they'd bring them on board the bus for us.)

She then said, "We tried that on our last tour, and all that we could see in the pictures was our reflection in the glass."

"Really?" I asked, looking at the window, and not even seeing my reflection in the dark.

"Oh, yes," she replied. "The flash just bounced off the window and lit us up."

Hmm, this is a tough one. You're on a dark bus, at night, trying to take pictures through the window of Christmas lights outside the bus, and you're using a flash???? Here's your sign.

(BTW, if you are within driving distance and have thought about going to see the famed Marshall "Wonderland of Lights," don't bother. I mean, for a small town they were okay, but we've seen better in many other places -- and if you've seen the Osborne Spectacle, definitely don't bother.)

Not that Osbourne. This Osbourne:

Jennings Osborne, a Little Rock, Arkansas, businessman, began putting up lights nearly a decade ago, at the request of his young daughter. (Read our 2002 interview with Jennings Osborne HERE!) Each year, he added to the displays. When he ran out of room, Osborne bought the two houses on either side of his home so he could continue his creativity. Neighbors complained, however, and the Arkansas Supreme Court ruled in October 1994 that Osborne's house, when adorned with the 3 million lights, was a public nuisance. Although legally barred from causing a "spectacle", Osborne still lit the display three nights. He was found in contempt of court and fined $1,500. The court suspended a 10-day jail sentence, but ordered him to pay $7,000 in attorneys' fees. In 1995, the Walt Disney Company brought the Osborne Christmas lights to Walt Disney World! Disney's agreement with Osborne gives it the option of keeping the display for 5 years, possibly longer.

BTW, there are now 5 million lights, and it gets bigger each year.

Not that Osbourne. ...Actually, darph's original post is intriguing... Can you imagine what an entertaining mess "Lights by Ozzy Osbourne" would be? Think of the press release:
New to the park this year: "The Ozzy Osbourne F&$*-in' Spectacle of F&$*-in' Lights and $*#&!" Experience the holidays the Osbourne way! Guests will venture down walkways strewn with broken bulbs and then have to thread their way through a jungle maze of wires and lights strung haphazardly across the street, all while Ozzy's 'music' plays in the background. White powder floats down from above, but wait -- that's not snow!! The brave souls who reach the end will be rewarded with animated lights showing Santa biting the head off of a bat! Don't miss it!

But wouldn't Santa bite the head off a reindeer? Or maybe an elf ?

"You will not f****** miss it!!!"

Actually, when I was at WDW last year, after Fantasmic! we went over to the Streets of America to see the lights, and I overheard several comments about "Ozzy Osbourne and his Christmas lights."

Also our incredible Yuletide Fantasy tourguide James also mentioned people asking about "...the Ozzy Osbourne Christmas lights..."

It's not unusual for people to think that the lights are named for Ozzy- as much because their "family" show seemed to become popular at almost the exact same time as the festival of lights was moved to Disney/ MGM Studios. I know that I even thought that for a while.

Most of the descriptions that I had read described the lights, not where they came from. And Disney doesn't do a whole lot to talk about where they came from. Even now I get asked about it all the time at the park when I'm working.

It's actually one that I wouldn't chalk up to a SGT, just because it's soooo common.
