View Full Version : What are you really thinking?

This is a question for those that portray characters in the parks.
Ok, this wack-a-doodle 35 year old woman rushes to you squealing your (character's) name and poses while her husband takes a picture.
What are you thinking about me... uh... oh... this woman I mean... :D:
Tell me the truth.

Glad to hear it, since I'm a 46 year old woman who does that very thing! I have way too many pictures with Eeyore.

Eeyore's my favourite, too. With Stitch a close second. Of course, I mean that in a suspension of disbelief way. Not in a CSI episode sort of way (no offense if you're into that).

It really depends on the guest. I have no problem with fanatics who are so overjoyed to see the character. They're actually a lot of fun! -because they're much more appreciative of what you do. It's like they know what we're going through. (We hear the phrase "God, You must be so hot in there!" about 75 times a day.)
So when I see a middle aged woman who is wearing a t-shirt with the character I'm portraying waiting in line (usually hopping up & down with excitement) I simply smile and say to myself, "Okay,...here we go."
I'll usually do a little more animation with the guest, because they'd understand & get it. When they are that much of a fan, you know it will be the highlight of their trip. They probably spent a lot of time asking where they could find you and what time. So they always get a little extra magic from me. (-I won't speak for everybody in the department, though.)
But there are guests who are just obnoxious. These are the same ones who crack themselves up by posing in those wooden characiture murals with holes to stick your face through.
You don't want to do too much around them, cause they'll never leave. Extra animation, hugs, and kisses just encourages them to do more. More pics, more not-so-funny comments about who they think is inside, more dancing...eventually they start ticking off the other guests who are patiently waiting their turn.
You just have to gauge the audience and know when to play and when to go on auto-pilot.
And as far as the question "what are you really thinking?" goes,...
I'm usually thinking "Oh god, why do guys who have hair all over their body and don't shower wear tank-tops???"

I'm a Donald nut. Anyone who knows me gives me a good hard time about this. I have a back stage character story that made my day. It was raining and everything was canceled. I ERed cause I was wet and wanted to go home. I was walking back to go clock out and a Character Host, Mickey, Minnie, and Donald were walking towards CFA with 1 umbrella. I asked if they could use a hand and offered my umbrella. Donald rushed to my side to get under the umbrella. It made my day, I walked them to where they needed to go, got a hug from Donald and then felt on top of the world for the rest of the day. I still talk about this. What can I say Donald makes my day even just seeing him in the parade.

I loved working timekeeper because I got to see stitch! My favorite moment though was one time stitch wanted to ride buzz lightyear, so I escorted him through the back door, and I joking told one of my coworkers he (stitch) was my boyfriend, and at that time stitch took my arm and gave me a *kiss* on the cheek. After he got on the ride, I said "call me"! the guests around for the situation laughed and it still makes me smile..

I get kind of the same thing...I have many characters I like, but when any character gets on my boat, (at Storybook they ride all the time, especially the Princesses) I get a little giddy inside. I know they're just doing a job, but still it's fun and the guests are always excited.

Same thing with me and storybook. If I get a character on my boat that I really like (Alice, Wendy, Aurora, or Cinderella) I get giddy inside and theme a little to them with my narration or an introduction to them. Once we had Snow White, Aurora, Cinderella, and Belle come on with a 45 minute span and it was chaos, but still great fun!
It's just always fun to see people be the characters and many do a wonderful job of it!

I'm usually thinking "Oh god, why do guys who have hair all over their body and don't shower wear tank-tops???"What about adults who just want to give a hug to Pooh, Tigger, or Eeyore? ;) Last Christmastime, my wife and I spotted them coming on stage in the UK. They entered the last shop, where the picture area was. They had their Chistmas wear on, so we got a picture with them that we will use for our Christmas cards next year. We're adults that act like kids at heart. We are rather subdued, but getting a hug from a character puts a smile on our faces and a smile in our hearts. No jumping around while in line, no pushing kids out of the way - in fact, we have even allowed some (nice) "impatient" kids in front of us :) No, we don't stick our heads through wooden cutouts. We don't ask the characters "out of character" questions. We just enjoy what you - ALL YOU CM's - do. :)

Frankly, I think the OP is rather rude. When I (26) go to Disney, it is almost always with my mom (56)(in two days she'll be 56 actually). We both absolutely adore Mickey and Minnie Mouse, and being able to get a picture with them is about the number one reason why we pay huge amounts of money to spend a vacation in a theme park, instead of on a tropical beach with sexy waiters bringing exotic cocktails.
I think it's great when adults get all exited about characters, because it shows that Disney succeeded in its magic, Disney succeeded in the make-belief it's all real (of course it's real, that's really Mickey Mouse, duh-uh, who else has such big ears, except from Minnie??????? )
Sorry, just had to say that :)

Hmmmm...I didn't sense anything rude in the post. I think she was just curious about what people in the costumes felt about adults who get the same kind of child-like glee as our younger patrons of the park when they meet a character. As I stated before, I don't mind it at all. But I don't speak for everybody. I know there are a few tempermental people in costume who would consider an overly-excited adult hugging a character as a freak. Not saying that I haven't met my share of actual freaks, (anyone who legally changes their name to their favorite Star Wars character is asking for their boarding pass to freakdom) but I have a no problems with extroverts. It makes the job interesting! And if you're on vacation and get a chance to act like a kid again, what better place to do it than DisneyWorld?

A similar thing happened to me long time ago when I was working Fantasmic! It was still early, I was an opener. I was checking out the list to see where I was stationed and with whom backstage behind the green doors. Of course, it is not rare you see characters walking up and down the stairs. On this particular day, Chip and Dale came down the stairs, they wanted to borrow one of our Fantasmic! jackets, so "Chip" borrowed one jacket and one of flashlights and started going, "Stay to your right, please, stay to your right!!!" LOL I found that funny!! It was something that made my day!

You know the best thing about adults that appreciate the characters is the fact they still believe in magic (blvinmagic). That is what WDW is all about isn't it? In light of September 11th and the war in Iraq, sometimes it is nice to know there is some place you can be a kid regardless of your age. We all have to be grown-ups most of the year; fight rush hour traffic, live with the crime on the streets, the rising gas prices, rude behavior all around us, and, some us, having a child in Iraq not knowing if we will see them again. It is nice to know magic still exist somewhere. Especially in WDW. When CM's put on their costumes they may think they are just doing the job they were hired to do but they are not. In that costume they provide joy and peace to children of all ages. You do your part to make this world go around regardless of how you are treated by some of the guests. In other words keep up the good work and don't let the idiots get you down.

That is the thing about Disney!!! It is a alternate universe where we can just forget all of life's little problems and indulge in a world of fantasy from reality where everyone young and old can be young kids at heart. That is what Disney does, it creates a magical atmosphere to run around in.

When I was a kid, don't ask me why, I was afraid of the characters. I find that the older I get the more I love interacting with the characters. They are so much fun. All you CMs need to keep up the good work, and I will keep coming if you do that.

OK, I've been debating on whether to ask this for a while, but I think I will (as it relates more-or-less directly to the OP).
I'm 32-years-old, and am usually pretty reserved. But there are times when I'm at Disneyland and it's been a really rough week :badmood: (or few weeks ... or months - I don't really get to go that often). When that happens, sometimes I see the characters, and I would like nothing more than to play with Tigger or Goofy, or hug Mickey or Belle.
I understand that often the Characters enjoy the interactions like the playing. Hey, as far as I'm concerned, when I'm at Disneyland you really *are* Snow White, Aladdin, the White Rabbit, or whomever. But what about the hugs? Would that seem odd to you (especially the face characters)? :o: I don't want to end up as an SGT because I needed some cheering up.
And since I'm really pretty reserved, can anyone offer suggestions on how to go about initiating either of these types of interactions for someone who's not very good at just walking up to a character arms open wide or ... however one would start to play.
Thanks for any help. We now return you to your usual SGT's. :D:

But what about the hugs? Would that seem odd to you (especially the face characters)?
-Never performed a face role...well, at least not on the street. (That's a different story.) Anyways,....
Hugs are fine. We get thousands a day, and we're very used to them. The only thing weird is when the 'standard hug rule' is broken. A regular hug lasts for maybe 3 or 4 seconds. Here's how it goes:
You make eye contact, hold out your arms, embrace, hold, pat or rub the back, and break away.
That shouldn't take longer than a few seconds. If that protocol is broken...we begin to wonder what's wrong.
For example:
You make eye contact, hold out your arms, embrace, hold...hold...hold...try to break away...hold...hold...pat the back...pat some more...break away!!!
Any hug that lasts for 10 seconds or more takes us off 'auto pilot' and we begin to wonder what the motivation behind the hug is.
Is an emotional attatchment being made? is the guest crying? Is it something else?
Even though you are a complete stranger, and the chances of us meeting again are completely remote, we will still treat you and hug you like we've been best friends forever. When we don those costumes, we are those characters. It's a completely different mindset.
Hugs are fine. -Expected and anticipated. It's part of our job, and we love it.

My first day at the MK during training, and our Trainer decides to take both us trainees to the Mouseketeeria. So we're all sitting in our booth, having a lovely chat, when one of the princesses - I have no idea who - saunters by wearing just a T-shirt and her bloomers.
Granted, she wasn't indecent per se - but my fellow trainee and I stopped in mid-sentence, turned, and stared at her as she left. We turned around, only to discover our Trainer was having convulsions of laughter - seriously, we considered hauling her over to First Aid. She later told us we helped her clear out her sinuses, we'd made her laugh so hard...

Well... you do get all the freaks there.
True semi-related story: waaaay back in High School (I went to HS in Atlanta), some friends of mine casually announced they were writing their own role-playing game, and were gonna get it published. They invited me to be part of the alpha playtest group, adding that if the head guys in charge and I hit it off, I might be able to get a job with this fledgling company.
My response: "No thanks - that sounds like a colossal waste of time."
Two years later: that role-playing game, "Vampire: The Masquerade" is released and becomes the hottest role-playing game EVER.
I still lose sleep over that one.

"I'm usually thinking "Oh god, why do guys who have hair all over their body and don't shower wear tank-tops???""
*sigh* .. I'm going to be down in FL at the same time as Gay Days next week.. And just like last time, I'm sure that thought will cross my mind more than once.
On a separate note.. Very early on, I worked a Disney Studios employee's function at DL one night and it just so happened I was backstage with the CM dressed as Mickey for the evening.
He went on stage.. and when he came back.. he pulled hhis head off and then I realized Mickey was a GIRL! I just stared. Someone had once told me that often Mickey was a girl. But seeing it was just weird.
Even more shocking was what came next.
Mickey had a Marlboro as she went on break. She looked back at my astonished face and just roared laughing at me.
When she recovered she commented, "You're new here huh?"

I am working during SWW and I thought I met Linda twice...turns out both times it was not her. My fellow CMs thought so too at first but then we were able to narrow it down some. I overheard two character handlers talking beside me in the break room about how she freaked out when R2D2 came out that morning and how they were going to get more security over there from now on. Now that was pretty funny. I'm not sure about meeting her, but I would like to see her....from a distance. lol
One of the Guests that I was talking to, a huge SW freak/fan but with a regular name, had been invited to be in the parade and everything. I thought that was kinda neat. We talked for a bit, then she drove away in her Jedi transport <ECV>...telling me quite seriously- May the force be with you. Kinda freaked me out...but then I just cracked up. It takes all kinds, I tell ya. And they all vacation at Disney World!!

I stopped in last weekend - saw a couple dressed in very badly done homemade Star Wars costumes tell another guest, "Oh, we're just casual fans - we're not, you know, freaks."
I had to walk out of the area before I burst out laughing in their faces.
Note to Guests: "Casual" fans would wear a Star Wars T-shirt. Not three layers of polyester and wool on a 95 degree day in the Florida sun.
Oh, one other thing: Once you turn 13 it begins to become slightly creepy to continue to come to the park dressed up in the Princess costumes. When you're 18 and working at the park in the College Program (and NOT in Entertainment) it becomes downright disturbing. Just a friendly word of advice, if'n you're wondering why you can't find a date this weekend, you know.

The first time I remember going to Disneyland (I was 5, soon to be 6) I was terrified whenever a character was around. (My parents tell that on our previous trip when I was 3 I would burst into tears at the sight of anyone in a costume.) About halfway through our day we saw Chip n Dale taking pictures, as sacred as I was of the costumes, I really loved Chip n Dale and decided I would wait in line to meet them, silent tears running down my face the whole time lol When I got to the front of the line they could tell I was scared and nervous and one of them got down on their knees and motioned for me to come over, I stepped over and got a little hug and then the other one hugged me and they started to do a little ring around the rosey type dance with me. We took a great picture together and I wasn't ever scared of a character at Disney again (In fact I demanded that we find Minnie Mouse because I really needed a picture with her lol). So now when I see Chip n Dale at the parks I love getting a picture because it reminds me of those two guys (or girls) in those suits that took the time to make a little girl feel better. I always wonder if the people in the suits think it's weird, so I'm glad someone finally asked the question :)

No, what's Linda's spat this year..lol I remember working SWW and had to watch her everytime "Luke" was out on set. He hated going out there alone, and Linda would always glare daggers at Leigha (SP?). Linda, for those of you who are going huh???, is ahhhhhhhh, hmmmm, SPECIAL! She has had her name changed LEGALLY to Linda Skywalker, and Luke is hers only! What hole do these people crawl out of????
A CM who is friends with my neighbor told us about a couple that visits MK every Sunday to watch the parade in the exact same spot, and carrying a babydoll no less! Too freaky!! EVERY stinkin' week, or so she said. And apparently they get ballistic if someone else is in their spot because they must be there so the characters can wave to them. Are there lots more freaky people out there? Don't they know how to get a life? Mr. Syndrome and I love WDW, but I hope someone puts us out of our misery if we ever legally have our last name changed to Mouse or start running around with dressed up dollies.

I think this is her friend. I saw them together at Fantasmic one night.
Does anyone know her name? Someone told me her name is Leah Solo Amidala. Did she change her name too?

Watch out for anyone carrying one of those light sabers. I was in Sharper Image picking up some stuff for my kids. A guy came in with one in a PVC pipe scabbard. He was pissed because be bought a blue light saber and discovered from one of his friends that they also came in red. He was dressed in a wife beater shirt to cover his beer belly, shorts and knee high black socks. Socks in Hawaii?
He was waving his saber around at the sales guy, screaming that he was a martial arts guru and he wanted a red light saber NOW! Sensing a oncoming train wreck, I paid for my stuff and beat a hasty retreat. The sales guys may have sicced the audio animatronic monkey head on him.

The gal in the pic came into Writer's ALOT during SWW. I only chatted with her once I think. I think my co-worker called her Al- he knew her. He said she comes in even when it's not SWW- but thats been over and I havent seen her again. From the pic of Linda- I saw her walking down NY Street, and either she changed her hair or my co-workers were completely wrong on her appearance. My manager said that was indeed her friend. And I heard somewhere that Linda's full name is Linda Anakin Kenobi Solo Skywalker. I could have Kenobi and Solo switched around. Anyone else heard?

Is that "towel baby?" I read on another board that the "mother" of "tower baby" will get really upset if the CMs don't treat the "baby" as real.
I've read about another guy that is in love with Susie and Perla.

Ooooo, I'll have to ask her! I thought it was a doll, but these people sounded weird enough to be carrying a towel around.
What is it about WDW that attracts the "special" people? (And I don't mean that in a cruel way towards people with genuine mental disabilities...I love how Carlos Mencia differentiates between people who were born "dee duh dee" and those who were born and THEN "dee duh dee.")
I've read about another guy that is in love with Susie and Perla.
Ya got that right. He posts all over the Disney Boards about his visits with Susie and Perla.

These are just some of hundreds of his posts. Sometimes he posts like a baby and other times like an adult. Not sure what to think of him. He may have a low IQ, or autism or something but he sure can change his posting style over and over.

I think he may have some mental disability. From what I have read, he lives at home and works at a supermarket. I believe he lives in the Orlando area, close enough for either of his parents to take him to WDW for a Saturday or an evening.
Anyone know Susie and Perla ? I am curious what the CMs think about him.
Theres been a long running discussion on whether or not he has a disability or is just faking one for attention. Someone posted a link to some of his threads on a vegan board where he posts normal. In that post on the vegan board he told them he was going to change his posting style to post meek and mild on the Disboard to get more responses: http://webgroups.us/animalliberationfront/viewtopic.php?p=6576&highlight=#6576

ah yes, FC! he is quite the poster. I don't know what his deal is either but I'm interested in what Perla and Suzie think of their #1 fan.

One day, a new CM we had just warned about TBL went up to her, looked at her towel, and said, "Ooo, what a pretty baby!"
TBL replied, "It's just a stupid towel, you moron!" then walked onto the attraction muttering -- to the towel baby -- about the stupid people in the park that day.
New CM's reaction: :dropmouth

I do not wnat to talk to this TBL person, but I'd love to people watch from afar........very very far. She sounds like a "scary to talk to, but funny to watch" kind of person.
